"Mmm…"
A delicate nasal sound was heard as Lucy slowly opened her eyes. She saw only darkness and blinked her eyes in a daze before realizing where she was.
"Jones, are you there?" Lucy turned her head to look at the leopard-ear girl sleeping beside her. They had taken a rest after eating in the afternoon, and now she had no idea what time it was.
"Hm?" Jones's eyelashes fluttered. She opened her red eyes and immediately rolled out of bed.
Click…
The sound of a flint being struck echoed, and a candle was lit, immediately illuminating the dark room.
"Jones, what time is it now?" Lucy sat up, her long golden hair cascading down, giving her a lazy aura.
Jones's hair was a mess. She walked to the window and looked out to see that it was brightly lit with torches, and the main street was bustling with pedestrians. It was very lively.
"It probably just got dark a little while ago," Jones said flatly. There was a hint of annoyance on her face. She had slept so soundly that Lucy had to wake her up, something that had never happened before.
"It only just got dark? I thought a long time had passed," Lucy said, stretching languidly. This bed was too comfortable. "..." Jones's face was cold as she grabbed her long brown hair. This city exuded a tranquil atmosphere that she wasn't quite used to.
Lucy got out of bed, went to the window, and saw how lively it was outside. She remembered what the front desk had said about a performance today and quickly said, "Jones, hurry up and get ready. Let's go out for a walk."
"Mhm," Jones grunted coolly. She attached the finger blades from the bedside to her waist, tied her long brown hair with a cord, and threw on a robe. That was her ready.
Lucy coiled her golden hair at the back of her head, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and put on a robe. She too was ready. She was the first to open the door and walk out, now very curious about the world outside.
Pat, pat, pat…
Under Jones's protection, Lucy came out onto the main street. She looked at the bonfires on both sides of the road and the stream of people all heading in one direction, finding it all very novel.
She was a princess, but she rarely went out of the royal palace for fun, let alone at night. Besides, there was nothing to do in the royal capital at night. The streets were deserted, except for drunk sons of nobility.
It was nothing like the scene before her, with streets full of people, shouting, laughter, and chatter, creating a vision of prosperity.
"It's incredible. To think there are so many people out this late at night," Lucy remarked.
Jones's red eyes scanned their surroundings vigilantly. She was also quite surprised. She had been to many cities, and it was rare for commoners to be out wandering at night.
"Ryan, hurry up, don't dawdle! We'll be showing disrespect to the Lord if we're late," Liza said, tugging Ryan along. "The show starts in less than ten minutes."
"Alright, alright, stop rushing me, we're almost there," Ryan said, adjusting his clothes as he walked. The two had been trying to make a baby right before they left, which is what made them late.
Lucy quietly watched the two people walk past, silently taking a mental note. Their conversation could serve as material for her novel.
"Here, give me the child. You walk faster," Bryan said, reaching out to take the child from his wife's arms. Despite his plump figure, he began to walk briskly.
"Okay!" Bryan's wife chuckled. Her husband's shop business had been getting better and better these last two days. That newspaper advertisement had multiplied their income several times over.
Lucy watched the fat man jogging briskly and the woman following closely behind him, and couldn't help but smile. This couple was also very interesting.
"Jones, let's hurry over and see too," Lucy said with a smile. She was quite looking forward to seeing what kind of performance was ahead. Could it be similar to the stage plays in the capital?
The two followed the flow of people and soon arrived at a square. They saw a strange stage up ahead with a large white cloth on it. There were several rows of chairs in front of the stage, and the two couples they had met on the road were sitting in those chairs.
The area around the stage was crowded with people. Lucy and Jones were also part of the crowd, and everyone was discussing in low voices.
"I heard there will be three shadow plays, and they're all free for everyone to watch for four consecutive nights."
"That's great! I can finally see what a shadow play is like."
"Yeah, the City Lord is truly benevolent, giving us paid leave and even putting on a shadow play for us."
"..."
"Shadow play?" Lucy frowned. What new kind of stage play was this? What a strange name.
"Look, the City Lord is here! He's so handsome, just like a prince!"
"Wow! Miss Nicole is so beautiful."
"Miss Annie is also very cute. Everyone is so beautiful."
"..."
Lucy and Jones followed everyone's gaze and saw a group of people walking from the direction of the castle towards the chairs in front of the stage. The style of their clothes made Lucy's eyes widen in a daze.
Due to the distance and the darkness, she couldn't see the fabric clearly, but the style of the clothes amazed her. They were so noble, gorgeous, and fashionable. It made Lucy feel that those people were the real prince and princesses. "Huh? Is that person Elisa?" Lucy recognized a familiar face in the group. That exquisite face and white hair were too obvious.
"Should we go and acknowledge her?" Jones asked coolly, her eyes fixed on the fully armed knights. She felt a sense of danger from them.
"No, not for now," Lucy said, shaking her head. She didn't want to reveal her identity yet.
Jones's red eyes glinted as she reminded her faintly, "If you find her and ask, won't you know if the doctor is real or not?"
"Oh, right!" Lucy had a sudden realization. Dahlia and the other woman had said that the City Lord's medical skills were excellent. This was a perfect opportunity to find out from Elisa.
"What's the plan?" Jones asked indifferently.
"Let's not be hasty," Lucy said, shaking her head. She frowned in thought, trying to figure out how to approach Elisa without being discovered.
After all, her status as a princess was too sensitive and would attract too much trouble. She didn't know what kind of person this City Lord was. Even if he was managing Sedona City so well now, you could know a person's face but not their heart. There was no guarantee he wouldn't have ill intentions. She couldn't just trust a stranger based on a few words from Dahlia and her companion.
