Rick woke up to the sensation of sunlight burning through his eyelids and the smell of expensive coffee that he definitely hadn't brewed.
He groaned, stretching his limbs. His body felt heavy, a pleasant, bone-deep lethargy that only came from extreme physical exertion followed by the kind of sleep that bordered on a coma. His muscles ached—a reminder of the railgun recoil, the robot dog fight, and the marathon session in this very bed just a few hours ago—but it was a good ache. He rolled over, reaching out. The bed was empty. The sheets were a tangled, chaotic mess of white linen, evidence of the war zone they had turned the mattress into, but Sharon and Nadia were gone.
