Chapter 31 - Butterfly Belts and Boys With Issues

Y/n POV

After dinner, I went to the bedroom to take a bath. Emma mentioned she was calling Max and would be here in an hour. I was about to fall asleep when my phone rang.

Of course. Mr. Annoying.

I sighed and picked up the call. "What?"

"I want to see you. Pick up the video call," he demanded.

I sighed again. "I'm tired," I yawned.

"Pick up the fucking call, Y/N, or I'll be there in minutes."

"H—" Before I could finish, he hung up.

A second later, my screen lit up again—video call.

I rolled my eyes and picked up.

"What is your problem?" I asked, staring at him through the screen. He was lying on his bed, looking way too comfortable.

Mr. Annoying smirked. "You… you are my problem."

I rolled my eyes. Typical.

"By the way, what was that this morning?" he asked.

I frowned. "What?"

"You said you don't like anyone—blah, blah, blah!" he mimicked dramatically.

I sighed. "It's none of your business."

He let out a deep sigh. "Better be. Because if I ever hear that you're with some guy…" He trailed off, his voice darkening. "Then God knows what I'll do with you."

I rolled my eyes again, ignoring his possessiveness. Then I suddenly remembered something.

"Hey, I want to tell you something," I said.

His lips curled into a smirk. "Tell me that you're coming with me to Paris.

I sighed. "No, I have to move somewhere else."

Mr. Annoying raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

"Hmm… and Kayden suggested I stay at his place."

His expression shifted. "Oooohhh," he dragged out.

"Yeah," I mumbled.

"And why is that?" he asked, his tone turning sharp.

I hesitated. "I-I don't want to live alone… Emma is moving in with her boyfriend."

Mr. Annoying didn't miss a beat. "You can stay at my house."

I scoffed. "Yeah, so it'll be easier for you to kill me, right?"

He grinned. "Exactly. And just so you know, you're not allowed to stay at any other guy's place. Is that clear?"

I groaned. "Ah, then where am I supposed to live?"

His smirk deepened. He patted the empty space beside him. "Here."

I rolled my eyes and lay down on my own bed. "Umm… I'm sleepy. Bye now."

"Wait—!"

I hung up before he could finish.

Not long after, I heard Emma come in and settle beside me. The exhaustion hit me like a wave, and before I knew it, I drifted into a deep sleep.

The Morning

"Y/N! Get up! You need to get ready for the office!" Emma shouted, yanking my blanket away like a villain revealing their master plan.

I groaned dramatically, curling into a ball. "Just five more minutes… please. My soul isn't ready to face the corporate world."

Emma crossed her arms. "No! You have exactly thirty minutes before you're late!"

I peeked at her from under my pillow. "Emma… what if I just quit my job and become a full-time sleeper?"

She rolled her eyes. "Then I'll make sure you starve. Now, get up!"

Before I could protest again, Emma suddenly froze. Her face twisted in horror as she clamped a hand over her mouth. "Y/N, I— Oh my God!"

And then she bolted to the bathroom like she was running from a zombie apocalypse.

Confused, I sat up. "Emma? You good?"

Instead of an answer, I heard the unmistakable sound of someone violently throwing up. My eyes widened. "Oh no…"

I rushed to the bathroom and found her dramatically hugging the toilet. I patted her back, trying not to laugh. "Emma, let's go to the hospital"

Emma wiped her mouth and sighed. "No, it's just because of pregnancy."

I blinked at her. "Wait… what?!"

The words barely sank in before my stomach flipped. "O—oh no—" I clamped a hand over my mouth and ran to the sink, throwing up as well.

Emma raised an eyebrow. "Looks like you're pregnant too," she joked, smirking.

I groaned, rinsing my mouth. "Yeah, right. Maybe we just have a secret twin connection or something."

She chuckled, shaking her head. "Okay, enough drama. Go get ready."

After a quick shower, I rummaged through my wardrobe and pulled out a beautiful white floral dress. It flowed down to my knees, cinched at the waist with a delicate butterfly belt. The sleeves were long, and both the front and back had a decent yet elegant neckline.

I quickly grabbed my shoes, slipped them on, and rushed out of my room. In the kitchen, Emma was casually eating pancakes like she had all the time in the world.

"Mmm, Y/N, come have some," she called with her mouth full.

I snatched my purse and phone. "No, Emma! I'm already late!"

Without another glance, I bolted out the door.

As soon as I stepped outside, my eyes landed on Kayden and Lucas standing on the road. The tension between them was so thick, I could almost see sparks flying. Lucas looked furious, while Kayden, with his hands lazily tucked into his pockets, stood completely unbothered, glaring right back at him.

I swallowed hard. "K-Kayden?"

Both of them turned to look at me.

Kayden smirked slightly. "Oh, you're here. I was just about to come get you, Y/N."

Before I could react, he smoothly grabbed my hand. My heart did a weird little flip, but before I could process that, I caught Lucas' expression. He was glaring at our hands like he wanted to burn a hole through them.

"Y/N, I need to talk to you. It's important," Lucas said, his tone sharp.

I didn't even hesitate. "But I don't want to talk to you."

Without sparing him another glance, I tugged on Kayden's hand and marched straight to his car. I could feel Lucas' eyes burning into my back, but I didn't care. I refused to look at him.

I hated him.

As Kayden opened the car door for me, he chuckled. "Wow, remind me never to get on your bad side."

I huffed, sliding into the seat. "Too late. You're already halfway there."

Kayden smirked as he got in, starting the engine. "Then I guess I'll just have to make sure you like me more than you hate me."

I rolled my eyes, but I couldn't stop the small smile creeping onto my lips.
