Chapter 10 - 10

CHAPTER TEN

Nankya tried to turn away from his penetrating gaze but she found herself unable to do so. She pretended to think about it for a while.

'Bridget...he used to call her that.'

'Do you know anyone called Beatrice?' Frank asked Nankya.

Sharon studied the expressions on Nankya's face. She looked like a bird ready for flight. She panicked. Anything at any moment would have made the young woman jump.

The detectives that had been stationed in Bulenga estate had brought in Nankya that morning after she had been found in Elvis's house trying to steal some documents. Most of them were bills for the house but one stood out. It was a medical bill that bared the name Beatrice Namulindwa. Sharon wondered why a maid would be interested in her deceased employer's bills off course unless she was trying to hide something.

'I don't know any one by that name.' those were the only words Frank was expecting.

Anything different and he would have had to profile Nankya again but she didn't disappoint. She was definitely letting on less than she knew. But if he failed, Sharon would definitely see to it that they got their hard earned information.

"mmmh. By the way, how come you didn't know that Elvis was dead? Or is that also another act?"

"No.no.I. I.I di.didn't. I mean I knew, I just wanted to pick something I left behind." Nankya stammered like anyone heading to jail.

'If you say so... I heard that you were nursing a baby...how is your baby?' Frank asked catching the woman off guard. She looked taken aback by this quick change of topic.

'My son is fine.' She could feel a sense of doom hovering over her head. The inspector looked like a stern angel wielding a weapon to use in punishing her for her misdeeds.

'....That's good to know. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to persuade you to give us any more information you might be hiding. So we are going to detain you till further notice,' Frank pushed back his chair and started to stand.

Nankya looked alarmed as she remembered the horrible stories she had heard about the horrors in prison. As expected Sharon was once again studying the expressions on the face of their suspect '...should you decide to tell us something relevant that you think I should know then you'll be released.' With that the inspector left the room. The two women looked at each other for quite sometime.

'You are hiding something.... You are Beatrice Namulindwa' Sharon said a smile in her voice. Nankya's eyes widened in horror giving the inspector the only indication of what she had earlier suspected. Like her husband, she too left the room leaving the maid to be tormented by her demons.

If someone had told Sharon that the death of a Casanova like Elvis was going to get the attention of the country in such a way she would have thought they were all joking. Elvis had turned out to be more complicated than anyone she had ever encountered; dead or alive. Somehow a journalist from a rival news paper to the Daily Tribunal, The Green Pages, had started spreading most of the information to the public. The public seemed to be soaking in all the information regarding the murder. Everything seemed to be more scandalous than they had expected. Elvis had been married to Bridget and Sarah Odong. He was also having affairs with two women that like Bridget seemed to have disappeared in thin air.

Sharon was sure of one thing that Beatrice Namulindwa and Nankya were the same person. The question that bothered her was how come everyone in the gate knew her as Nankya the maid and nothing else.

As if that wasn't enough, most of the tenants in those apartments to were complaining demanding to leave. They didn't appreciate the camera crew stationed outside their gate. Or the constant questions from the police. The only thing Sharon had managed to do was declare that they were all still suspects till the police got the culprit. Either they waited for a development in the case or they are put in prison to wait out.

Meanwhile in Bunga,

Henry Kavuma loved seeing the guilt on Celina's face. He had always known that he was a sadist but seeing her every morning with bug sized eyes made him smile. This wasn't Karma that had paid his cheating wife a visit but it was justice. He wasn't about to let her make him the laughing stalk on the streets of Kampala. He considered himself to be the kind of man that could find reason in any situation till he found himself with the walls around him crushing. He was sprawled out on his couch pretending to read the newspapers as he watched Celina set the table. He felt a tingle in his loins. Even from the awkward angle he was in, she was still able to turn him on. She looked hot. Celina looked at him again and as she had done for the past few months tried to avoid his gaze. Henry smirked his lips as he thought of how he was going to take advantage of her vulnerability.

Penelope came into the living room as usual complaining about something that he had no idea about except that it had something to do with a cartoon on the television she had been watching. She looked exactly like her mother something that Henry liked the most.

'Supper is ready.' Celina said in the same businesslike tone she had developed recently ever since the death of that man Elvis.

Elvis, Elvis, Elvis….how could Celina have expected to run off into the sunset with that fool!

And they claimed to be in love really! The only man that could ever love that woman was none other but me…..me…me….meeeeeee, Henry thought to himself as he sat. He felt the anger engulf him once again as it always did many months back when he found out about the affair.

With all the numerous faults the judge had, he was faithful to his wife. Regardless of the many women that were willingly parading themselves before him, he never looked at them twice. Some were even throwing their panties at him but he was not moved a bit. Others offered their maidenhood but he still ignored them. Its like the only female creature that had his heart was Celina. He often found himself wondering why she wanted to throw everything away all because of an idiot like Elvis who wanted nothing but money.

But all that was now in the past. The storm had past and right now all he had to do was teach his wife a lesson and she would never forget.

Henry stood up and walked to the table to join his family. He sat at the head of the table facing his wife and daughter. He held out his hands and he said a prayer out of formality considering he didn't believe in the Lord he was calling. He looked at Celina and thought of how sexy she would look with horror in her eyes if he hinted at his latest plan.

'Celina, what do you think about us expanding our family?'

She chocked on her rice.
