Chapter 1 - The Beginning After The End

What is it that humans live for?

Wealth? Love? Success? Or simply to exist?

Perhaps the answer differs for everyone. After all, no two people walk the same path in life. Some devote their entire existence to chasing wealth and recognition, while others find happiness in the simplest of things.

Yet, regardless of how we choose to live, we all share the same inevitable fate.

Death.

The unknown. The fear of being forgotten. Of leaving behind nothing but memories that will eventually fade with time.

But is it death itself that we fear? Or is it the possibility of reaching the end of our lives, only to realise that we never truly lived?

I once pondered this question.

And it remained unanswered until my very last breath.

I was a weak man.

Not physically, nor was I someone who had suffered through unimaginable hardships. In fact, compared to many others, I had lived a rather fortunate life.

My weakness was something far simpler.

I was afraid.

Afraid of failure. Afraid of disappointment. Afraid of dedicating years of my life to something, only to discover that all my time and effort had amounted to nothing.

And so, I chose the easier path.

While others worked tirelessly towards their ambitions, I remained where I was, convincing myself that there would always be another opportunity.

While others fell in love, married, and started families of their own, I watched from afar, quietly envying the happiness they had found.

I wanted to be someone.

Someone who could look back on his life with pride. Someone who had accomplished something meaningful, no matter how insignificant it might seem to others.

But I never knew where to begin.

Or perhaps, I simply lacked the courage to try.

After all, what reason did I have to change?

My life was comfortable.

I had a steady income, a roof over my head, and parents who cared for me. I never had to worry about where my next meal would come from. I had clothes to wear, entertainment to occupy my time, and a healthy body that allowed me to live without much difficulty.

What more could a person possibly need?

And yet…

Everything felt so terribly empty.

I remember returning home from work one evening, exhausted from another uneventful day. After eating dinner, I sat in front of my computer, mindlessly scrolling through whatever happened to catch my attention.

Minutes turned into hours.

Before I knew it, the clock had passed midnight.

I stared at the screen for a moment, trying to remember what I had accomplished that day.

Nothing came to mind.

And the worst part?

Tomorrow would be no different.

Wake up. Eat. Go to work. Come home. Eat again. Find something to pass the time. Sleep.

Repeat.

Day after day. Week after week. Year after year.

A seemingly endless cycle of monotony, broken only by the occasional holiday or fleeting moment of excitement.

Was this really all there was to life?

To spend the best years of my youth working, saving money for a future I wasn't even certain I would live to see?

And then what?

Retire when my body had grown old and weary? Spend whatever time remained enjoying the wealth I had accumulated, only to eventually leave it all behind?

We spend our youth preparing for a future in which we hope to finally live.

How ironic.

And yet, that was the reality I had come to accept.

Of course, I understood that life wasn't quite so simple. People worked to support their families, to pursue their ambitions, and to build something meaningful for themselves.

There was nothing inherently wrong with living an ordinary life.

Perhaps the problem was never the life I had been given.

Perhaps it was the way I had chosen to live it.

I wanted to live with purpose, too.

To wake up each morning with something to look forward to. To pursue a dream so passionately that even the thought of failure wouldn't be enough to stop me.

I wanted to experience the kind of happiness that made every hardship worthwhile.

But there was one problem.

I had no dream.

No grand ambition. No destination I desperately wished to reach. Nothing that made me feel as though my existence held any particular meaning.

And so, I continued living as I always had.

Waiting.

For what, I didn't know.

Perhaps I was waiting for an opportunity. Perhaps I was waiting for someone to enter my life and give it meaning.

Or perhaps I was simply waiting for something to change.

How foolish of me.

Because I would eventually come to understand something that had escaped me throughout my entire life.

Time waits for no one.

And neither does death.

I had spent so long waiting for my life to begin that I failed to notice it was already passing me by.

By the time I realised that, however, it was far too late.

Or at least…

That was what I believed.

Until that day.

The day everything changed.
