The afternoon sun beat down on Dock 1 as Luffy, Nami, and Usopp waited. Luffy's sharp eyes caught sight of Kalifa returning, accompanied by a man with blue hair wearing an expensive suit. What caught Luffy's attention wasn't the man's appearance, but rather the quiet confidence in his stride.
A small white mouse peeked out from the man's chest pocket, whiskers twitching as it surveyed the pirates. Luffy straightened his posture, his usual carefree demeanor shifting to something more dignified.
"I'm Monkey D. Luffy, captain of the Straw Hat Pirates."
The blue-haired man's eyebrows rose slightly, perhaps surprised by Luffy's formal greeting. "Nmaa... I'm Iceberg, Mayor of Water Seven and President of Galley-La Company." He studied Luffy with interest. "I hear you're interested in commissioning a new ship?"
"A new ship?" Usopp interjected, stepping forward. His hand unconsciously tightened on one of his revolvers. "We're here to get the Going Merry repaired, that's all." He turned his attention to Iceberg, excitement momentarily overriding his concern. "But while we're here, I have to ask – this whole place is amazing! How do you manage to keep the city functioning with all these water levels? And that sea train we saw, how does it run on the ocean?"
Iceberg chuckled, reaching up to pet the mouse in his pocket. "Water Seven was built by craftsmen who understood both the sea's power and its potential. As for the sea train..." His expression shifted slightly, almost imperceptibly, but Luffy caught it. "That's one of our city's proudest achievements. It connects several islands through railway lines built on the ocean floor."
"But how does it-" Usopp began, but Iceberg smoothly redirected the conversation.
"Kalifa, what can you tell me about our guests?"
Kalifa adjusted her glasses, light glinting off them as she consulted her notebook. "The Straw Hat Pirates, currently one of the most notorious crews in Paradise. Captain Monkey D. Luffy, bounty 356 million berries, Roronoa Zoro, First Mate, bounty 199 million berries. 'Black Leg' Sanji, bounty 139,696,969 berries. 'The Crimson Flame' Nami, bounty 77 million berries. Nojiko, bounty 41 million berries. 'The Sniper' Usopp, bounty 53 million berries. Tony Tony Chopper, bounty 29 million berries. And..." She paused momentarily, her voice taking on a slightly different tone, "'Devil Child' Nico Robin, bounty 379 million berries."
Luffy noticed the subtle shift in Iceberg's demeanor at the mention of Robin's name, though the mayor's face remained carefully neutral. The mouse in his pocket, however, retreated deeper into the fabric.
"Quite an impressive crew," Iceberg commented, his eyes scanning each of them. "Though I notice your bounties have risen significantly after recent... incidents."
"We've had our share of encounters," Nami said diplomatically, her hand briefly touching the scar on her stomach hidden beneath her clothes.
"Including an interesting confrontation in Mock Town, I hear," Iceberg said carefully. "Not many crews survive an encounter with Admiral Akainu."
Luffy's right arm twitched slightly, the scar beneath his sleeve seeming to burn at the memory. "We did what we had to do to protect our nakama," he said, his voice carrying a hint of the storms he commanded.
The tension in the air was broken by the arrival of Kaku, who landed nearby.
"Iceberg-san," Kaku said, his expression serious. "I've completed the inspection of their ship, the Going Merry."
Usopp stepped forward eagerly, but Luffy noticed how Kaku wouldn't quite meet their eyes. He already knew what the shipwright was going to say.
"The ship's keel is severely damaged," Kaku reported. "The frame is warped, and the stress points throughout the vessel have reached critical failure. It's frankly miraculous she's still floating."
"But you can fix her, right?" Usopp asked, his voice tight with desperation. "This is the best shipyard in the world!"
Iceberg shook his head slowly. "Some damage can't be repaired, no matter how skilled the shipwright. When a ship's keel is broken, it's like a person with a broken spine. There's no coming back from that."
Luffy watched as the color drained from Usopp's face. Luffy knew this day would come sooner or later. Going Merry was a wonderful ship, but that ship was nowhere strong enough to survive what the New World can throw at them.
"How much?" Nami asked suddenly, pointing at the bags behind them, five of them. "For a new ship, I mean."
"Nami!" Usopp protested, but she continued.
"We have 500 million berries. That should be enough for something decent, right?"
Iceberg studied them thoughtfully. "For that amount, we could build you something extraordinary."
"You're wrong!" Usopp's voice cracked with emotion as he confronted Kaku and Iceberg. "You're supposed to be the best shipwrights in the world! There has to be something you can do!"
Kaku maintained his professional demeanor, though his square nose seemed to droop slightly with genuine sympathy. "I understand your attachment to your vessel, but the facts are undeniable. The keel is fractured in seventeen places. The main mast is rotting from the inside out. The hull planks have been patched so many times they're more patch than original wood."
"We've fixed her before!" Usopp's hand swept toward the Going Merry in the distance. "Every time someone said she couldn't make it, we proved them wrong!"
"This isn't about proving anyone wrong," Kaku replied softly. "Your ship is literally holding herself together through sheer will at this point. One strong wave, one more battle, and she'll break apart beneath your feet. Do you want your nakama to be aboard when that happens?"
Usopp opened his mouth to argue further, but a sudden shift in the air made everyone freeze. Luffy had turned around, his storm-gray eyes focused on something behind them.
Seven figures in outlandish costumes – one wearing what appeared to be a full penguin suit, another dressed like a ballet dancer with a rhino mask – were attempting to sneak away with the Straw Hats' money bags.
"You know," Luffy's voice carried the quiet rumble of distant thunder, "some people might call it brave to try stealing from pirates in broad daylight." His eyes narrowed. "I call it stupid."
The sky, which had been clear moments before, darkened ominously. The thieves looked up just as a bolt of lightning, thin as a needle but blindingly bright, struck the ground between them. The electricity arced through all seven bodies, causing them to convulse before collapsing in a smoking heap.
"Holy shit," one of them managed to mumble before passing out, his penguin suit now sporting several singed spots.
Nami quickly retrieved their money bags, checking the contents. "Did you kill them?"
"Nah," Luffy replied, his eyes still on the thieves but his attention partially on Kalifa and Kaku. The two shipwrights were watching him with calculating eyes, as if mentally cataloging his abilities rather than showing surprise at the display of power. Interesting.
Iceberg, on the other hand, seemed genuinely impressed. "Quite the precise control you have there. Though it's probably better you left them alive. Franky tends to take it personally when someone kills his Family members."
Nami stepped forward. "These Franky Family members... they're more than just thieves, aren't they?"
Kalifa adjusted her glasses. "The Franky Family operates primarily as ship dismantlers. They target pirates, strip their ships for parts, and occasionally collect bounties. Though," she glanced at the still-smoking bodies, "they usually choose their targets more... wisely."
"Nmaa..." Iceberg's expression grew more serious. "While these members might not pose much threat to you, Franky himself is... different. He's earned his position in Water Seven's underworld."
Luffy's response was cut short by a commotion down the street. A man with light blonde hair partially covered by a top hat came sprinting past them, his long jacket flapping behind him as he clutched a bag to his chest. Two men in suits were in hot pursuit, waving papers and shouting about overdue payments.
"PAULIE, YOU DAMN DEADBEAT!" one yelled. "YOU CAN't RUN FROM YOUR DEBTS FOREVER!"
"WATCH ME!" Paulie shouted back, expertly vaulting over a water channel.
Iceberg sighed, though there was fondness in his expression. "That would be Paulie, one of our best rope specialists. He has... gambling issues."
The chase might have continued, but a dark figure suddenly dropped from above, landing between Paulie and his pursuers. The impact didn't even disturb the white pigeon perched on his shoulder.
Luffy's eyes narrowed instantly. The man is tall and slim, yet muscular, with arched eyebrows and a close-shaved goatee. He has shoulder length wavy black hair.
He wore a large black top hat with a sepia band. He wore brown trousers with caramel suspenders over a white tank-top and shoes with black toecaps.
But it wasn't his appearance that caught Luffy's attention – it was the way he moved, the way he held himself. Like a predator pretending to be harmless.
"Ah," Iceberg smiled. "And that would be Rob Lucci, our Chief of Sawing and Bolting."
The pigeon on Lucci's shoulder suddenly spoke in a high-pitched voice, addressing the debt collectors. "Coo~ Now, now, gentlemen. Perhaps we can reach a more civilized arrangement regarding Paulie's debts?"
Nami and Usopp chuckled at the talking bird, but Luffy noticed how Lucci himself remained completely silent, his dark eyes scanning the area with methodical precision until they locked onto Luffy's.
"That's so weird," Usopp laughed. "The pigeon does all the talking?"
"Hattori is quite the character," Iceberg confirmed. "Lucci hasn't spoken a word in years – a vow of silence, you see."
"Really?" Nami asked, still amused by the talking bird. "Why would a shipwright take a vow of silence?"
"Why indeed?" Luffy murmured, his storm-gray eyes never leaving Lucci's. The shipwright's gaze held something that reminded Luffy of Mihawk – the look of someone who had mastered the art of dealing death.
The pigeon continued negotiating with the debt collectors, but Lucci's attention remained partially on the Straw Hats. His eyes moved over each crew member, lingering slightly longer on Luffy, as if measuring him.
Paulie, taking advantage of the distraction, tried to slip away, but Lucci's hand shot out with incredible speed, grabbing his collar without even looking.
"Coo~ Now, Paulie," Hattori chided, "running away won't solve anything."
"Damn it, Lucci!" Paulie struggled. "Let go! I just need a few more days-"
The pigeon turned to the debt collectors. "Coo~ Give him until the end of the week. I'll personally ensure he pays."
The collectors, looking somewhat unnerved by Lucci's silent stare, quickly agreed and departed. Paulie slumped in relief, though he still couldn't break free from Lucci's grip.
"That's quite a grip for a shipwright," Luffy commented casually, though his tone carried a slight edge.
Hattori turned to face him. "Coo~ Working with heavy timber builds considerable strength, Straw Hat-san."
"I bet it does," Luffy replied, a small smile playing at his lips. "Just like I bet sawing and bolting teaches incredible speed and precision."
Something flickered in Lucci's eyes – appreciation, perhaps, or warning. The silent man finally released Paulie who walked up to Iceberg, the latter started telling him that he should stop gambling with money that are not even his.
Paulie was about to reply when he noticed something: well, two women in particular. He suddenly whirled around, his face turning bright red as he noticed Nami and Kalifa. He immediately covered his eyes with one hand, pointing accusingly with the other. "This- this is indecent! A shipyard is no place for such revealing clothing!"
Nami glanced down at her outfit - a perfectly normal tank top and jeans - then shared an exasperated look with Kalifa.
"Paulie," Kalifa adjusted her glasses, "we've discussed your inappropriate comments about women's attire."
"Inappropriate?! You're the ones being inappropriate! Showing off your... your..." Paulie's face grew even redder.
"Our what?" Nami asked sweetly, a dangerous glint in her eye.
Before Paulie could dig himself deeper, he suddenly grinned and flicked his wrists. Rope appeared as if by magic, wrapping around Lucci. "Got you this time!"
With a practiced motion, Paulie yanked the ropes, sending Lucci flying through the air. However, just before impact with the ground, Lucci twisted impossibly fast, landing on one hand with perfect balance; his fingers had dug into the solid floor like they were knives. Hattori hadn't even shifted from his perch.
"Coo~ Such childish games," the pigeon sighed.
"Damn it!" Paulie cursed. "How do you always do that?"
Iceberg cleared his throat. "Perhaps we should begin the tour? Galley-La's Dock 1 is the finest shipbuilding facility in the world."
As they walked through the massive dock, Luffy noticed every detail with sharp eyes. The facility was impressive - multiple dry docks capable of handling ships of any size, advanced equipment, and skilled workers moving with practiced efficiency. But he also noticed how the workers seemed to defer to Lucci despite his silence.
"This is where we shape the keel," Iceberg explained, pointing to a massive workspace. "The backbone of any ship must be perfect."
During the tour, Usopp had been growing increasingly agitated, his fists clenching every time someone mentioned "new ship" or "replacement."
"Speaking of ships," Luffy interjected smoothly, "what can we get for 500 million berries?"
Kalifa produced a leather-bound notebook seemingly from nowhere. "I've prepared a selection of options within your budget. Each design can be customized to your specific needs."
As they flipped through pages of magnificent ships, Usopp's tension grew visible. Finally, he burst out,
"But you haven't even looked at her properly!" Usopp burst out, stepping in front of Kalifa as she was showing them the notebook. "The Going Merry is special!"
"Sir," Kalifa said patiently, "we have extensive experience in-"
"Experience?" Usopp's voice rose higher. "Merry survived a lightning strike in Skypiea! She was shot up by a Knock Up Stream to the Sky Islands! She-"
"Those are exactly the kinds of stresses that damage a ship beyond repair," Kaku interjected, appearing suddenly from above. "Each of those incidents would have compromised her structural integrity."
"You don't understand!" Usopp turned to the workers nearby. "She's more than wood and nails! She's our nakama! She has a spirit!"
Some of the workers exchanged uncomfortable glances. Paulie scratched his head, looking embarrassed for Usopp.
"Young man," Iceberg said gently, "every shipwright here understands the soul of a ship. But sometimes-"
"No! You're just trying to sell us something expensive!" Usopp pointed accusingly. "You probably give this same speech to everyone who comes in with a damaged ship!"
"Usopp," Nami warned, but he was too far gone.
"I've fixed her before, I can fix her again! Just because you fancy shipwrights think you know everything-"
"That's enough," Lucci's pigeon spoke. "You're insulting the pride of Galley-La's craftsmen."
The workers had stopped pretending to work, many looking angry at Usopp's accusations. Kaku's usual smile had vanished, and even Paulie looked serious.
"Pride?" Usopp laughed bitterly. "What about loyalty? What about-"
The air suddenly became thick and heavy. Usopp's next words died in his throat as Luffy's Conqueror's Haki filled the dock. Workers collapsed around them, tools clattering to the ground. Usopp felt his knees buckle, not just from the pressure but from the disappointment he felt radiating from his captain.
"Jeez, what did the kid do?!" Paulie commented, suddenly feeling lightheaded. He quickly noticed his friends falling on the ground like bricks.
Lucci, however, didn't even flinch. His dark eyes watched Luffy with increased interest.
"I apologize for my crew member's outburst," Luffy said formally, releasing the pressure. "We understand the Going Merry's condition. We'll return tomorrow to discuss commissioning a new vessel properly."
"Of course," Iceberg nodded, though his expression had grown more thoughtful. "We'll have detailed proposals ready for your review."
"Thank you for your time and expertise," Luffy bowed slightly, then turned to leave. Nami and a subdued Usopp followed.
Once they were outside, Usopp found his voice again. "Luffy, why did you-"
"Because you were embarrassing us," Luffy cut him off, his voice firm, sounding like a captain, a voice he didn't often use with a remember of his crew. "I understand how you feel about Merry, Usopp. We all do. But throwing a tantrum in front of strangers won't change the facts."
"Facts?" Usopp's voice cracked. "Since when do you care about facts? You're supposed to believe in miracles!"
"I believe in protecting my nakama," Luffy replied quietly. "And right now, keeping Merry would put everyone at risk. Not just from the ship failing, but from our enemies. We need a stronger ship, Usopp. One that can handle what's coming."
"What do you mean?" Nami asked, sensing something deeper in Luffy's words.
Luffy glanced back at the shipyard. "Did you notice how they reacted to my Haki? Lucci, Kaku, Kalifa - they didn't even blink. They're not just shipwrights. They're something else entirely."
"Government agents?" Nami suggested.
"Maybe." Luffy's eyes narrowed. "But whatever they are, they're dangerous. And they're interested in us for some reason."
"Should we leave?" Nami asked, knowing they couldn't leave right away, not until they had a new ship.
"No," Luffy shook his head. "We need that new ship. But more importantly, I want to know why they're watching us. What they want with Robin."
"Robin?" Nami's eyes widened. "You think this has something to do with her?"
"Did you see how they reacted whenever her name came up? They know something." Luffy's expression hardened. "And I intend to find out what."
Going Merry
The crew gathered in the main room of the Going Merry, an unusual tension hanging in the air. Rain pattered against the windows - a localized storm that seemed to follow their captain's mood.
"Did you get everything?" Luffy asked, his voice carefully controlled.
Vivi nodded, her blue hair tied back practically. "Sanji and I stocked up on provisions. Enough to last us several months." She glanced at Sanji, who stood unusually quiet by the wall, his cigarette unlit.
"Medical supplies are fully restocked," Chopper added from his seat. "Robin helped me find some rare texts too."
"Good." Luffy took a deep breath. "Everyone, we need to talk about Merry."
Zoro, leaning against the doorframe, asked the question they all dreaded: "What did the shipwrights say?"
Instead of answering immediately, they walked inside the room where they always eat food, once everyone was inside, Luffy placed his hand on the wooden wall of their beloved ship. "We all knew this was coming. I've been warning you since we left Skypiea - Merry won't survive the New World."
"The shipwrights confirmed it," Nami added softly, placing the leather notebook on the table. "But they've shown us some options for-"
"Options?" Usopp's voice cracked. "Options to replace our nakama?"
"Usopp," Nojiko warned, seeing the storm clouds darkening outside.
"No!" Usopp stood up, knocking his chair back. "You're all just giving up! Luffy's a traitor to his own ship!"
The room fell deadly silent. Lightning flashed outside, illuminating Luffy's face as he slowly turned to face Usopp.
"What did you say?" Luffy's voice was dangerously quiet.
"You heard me!" Usopp's voice rose higher. "A real captain would fight for his ship! But you're just throwing her away!"
"I'm trying to keep this crew alive!" Luffy slammed his hand on the table, thunder cracking overhead.
"Guys, please," Chopper pleaded, but neither was listening.
"Usopp, Luffy's right. This is not easy for him, but you know he is right about this." Nami came to protect her captain. She herself didn't like the idea of leaving Going Merry, but she knew this was something that simply needed to happen.
"You're all just giving up!" Usopp shouted. "None of you understand what Merry means!"
"We all love this ship, Usopp," Luffy said evenly. "But-"
"No! You don't get it! Kaya gave her to us! She trusted me- trusted us to take care of Merry!" Usopp's voice cracked with emotion. "After everything she did for us, how can we just abandon her?"
"We're not abandoning her," Nami tried to interject. "We're-"
"She's special!" Usopp cut her off. "I've fixed her every time! I know every plank, every nail! The shipwrights don't understand - Merry has a spirit!"
"Of course she does," Luffy's voice remained calm but firm. "That's why we can't keep hurting her like this. Each repair is just prolonging her pain."
"Pain? What do you know about her pain? I'm the one who's kept her sailing! I'm the one who-"
"The keel is cracked, Usopp," Luffy interrupted. "You know what that means. You know enough about shipbuilding to know what that means for a ship."
"I can fix it! I can-"
"No, you can't. Not even the best shipwrights in the world can fix a cracked keel. It's like a broken spine."
Thunder rolled outside as Usopp paced frantically. "Then we'll be more careful! We'll avoid storms! We'll-"
"In the New World?" Luffy's voice hardened. "Where magnetic storms can appear in seconds? Where Sea Kings can emerge without warning? Where every island is a death trap?"
"We'll figure it out! We always do!"
"Until we don't," Luffy said quietly. "Until we're in the middle of the ocean and she finally breaks apart. Until we're all drowning because I was too weak to make this decision."
"Weak?" Usopp laughed bitterly. "You're being a coward! The Luffy I know would fight for his nakama!"
"I AM fighting for my nakama!" Luffy's voice finally grew louder. "Every single person on this crew is my responsibility! I will not watch them die because you're too blinded by sentiment to see reason!"
"Sentiment?" Usopp's voice rose higher. "Is that what you call loyalty now? What about all our memories here? What about-"
"Memories won't keep us alive!" Lightning flashed outside. "Memories won't stop the sea from swallowing us whole when Merry finally breaks! She'll be our tomb if we keep sailing her!"
"You don't know that! You're just listening to those fancy shipwrights who-"
"I've known it since Skypiea! I've felt her growing weaker! Every battle, every storm - she's dying, Usopp! And your repairs aren't saving her, they're torturing her!"
"NO!" Usopp grabbed the notebook of ship designs and threw it across the room. "Kaya believed in us! She gave us Merry because she knew we'd take care of her! I promised her-"
"And what would Kaya say if she knew you were risking everyone's lives for that promise?" Luffy's words hit like a punch in the gut. "Would she want us to die trying to preserve her gift?"
"I..." Usopp faltered for a moment before his face hardened again. "You just don't understand! None of you do! I'm the only one who really knows Merry! I'm the only one who-"
"Who what? Who's willing to get his entire crew killed for his pride?" Luffy's eyes flashed dangerously. "That's what this is really about, isn't it? Your pride as a shipwright? Your promise to Kaya? You're putting your feelings above everyone's safety!"
"At least I have feelings!" Usopp shot back. "You're just cold now! Ever since Mock Town, you've changed! Speaking of safety - you want to talk about putting the crew in danger? Fine! It's your fault Akainu found us!"
The room temperature seemed to drop several degrees as the argument crossed a line from which there would be no return...
"Usopp, stop," Nami stepped forward.
"No! He needs to hear this!" Usopp pointed accusingly at Luffy. "It's your fault! Your fault Akainu found us! Your fault Merry got burned! Your fault Nami and Robin got scarred!"
The storm outside suddenly went dead silent. The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees as Luffy's eyes locked onto Usopp. Everyone could feel the captain's Haki building, making it hard to breathe.
Nami's golden wings flared involuntarily, her hand moving to the scar on her stomach. Her face had gone pale, eyes wide with shock that Usopp would weaponize their trauma like this.
Robin's normally composed expression cracked. Multiple hands appeared and disappeared around the room as her control slipped. The memory of magma searing her flesh made her close her eyes, touching the place in her arm where the scar was left.
Zoro's hand clenched his swords so hard his knuckles went white. His eyes fixed on Usopp, but he held back only by his absolute loyalty to Luffy's commands.
Sanji's cigarette fell from his lips, his first real reaction since his captain returned to the ship. His visible eye narrowed dangerously as he shifted his weight, ready to move if needed.
Vivi's hand flew to her mouth, sand unconsciously swirling around her feet as her control wavered. "Usopp," she whispered, horrified. "How could you..."
Nojiko's fists clenched, water from the glasses on the table beginning to ripple and rise. Her expression showed both anger and deep disappointment in their sniper.
Chopper shrank back, tears in his eyes as he watched his friends tear each other apart. The little doctor's hooves trembled as he clutched his medical bag - the same bag he'd used to treat their burns after Mock Town.
But it was Luffy's reaction that truly silenced the room. The storm outside went deathly still, like nature itself was holding its breath. His eyes had shifted from their usual storm-gray to an almost black intensity. The scars on his right arm - three parallel lines of burned flesh from Akainu's magma - seemed to pulse as his Haki built to suffocating levels.
"Captain," Nami reached for him, her voice shaking, but Luffy held up a hand to stop her.
A single drop of blood fell from Luffy's clenched fist where his nails had cut into his palm. When he spoke, his voice was barely a whisper, but it carried more menace than any shout:
"Say that again."
"I-" Usopp faltered for a moment, then rallied. "You heard me! You got cocky in Mock Town! We should have run away without wasting time, but you wanted to fight an Admiral! And look what happened!" He gestured wildly. "Merry's barely holding together! Nami and Robin got hurt! All because you-"
The window exploded inward as a bolt of lightning struck just outside, showering the room with glass. Rain began pouring in horizontally, defying gravity as Luffy's powers responded to his rage.
"Captain," Vivi said softly, placing a hand on his arm. "Please."
Luffy's jaw clenched as he visibly fought for control. The rain slowly returned to its natural direction, though the storm continued to rage.
"You think I don't replay that day in my head?" Luffy's voice was low and intense. "You think I don't see their scars every day and hate myself for not being strong enough?"
"Then why-"
"Because I won't let it happen again!" Luffy roared, his voice competing with the thunder. "I won't risk this crew's lives sailing a ship that could break apart at any moment! I won't watch my nakama die because you're too stubborn to face reality! Why do you think I fought Aokiji by myself?"
"Merry won't-"
"She's dying, Usopp!" Luffy's voice cracked. "Can't you feel it? Every creak, every groan - she's in pain! And keeping her going is just torturing her!"
The room fell silent except for the storm outside. Tears were streaming down Usopp's face now, matching the rain.
"She's our home," he whispered brokenly.
"Yes," Luffy's voice softened slightly. "She is. She carried us through everything. She protected us, fought for us, loved us. That's why we owe her a proper goodbye, not a watery grave when she finally breaks apart."
"I can't..." Usopp shook his head. "I can't accept this."
"Then leave."
The words fell like physical blows. Everyone stared at Luffy in shock.
"Captain!" Nami gasped.
"I mean it." Luffy's eyes never left Usopp. "If you can't accept my decision as captain, if you're going to throw Mock Town in my face every time you disagree with me, then leave. Because I will not risk this crew's lives over your sentimentality."
Usopp stood trembling, tears still falling. Finally, he straightened up.
"Fine," he said quietly. "Then I challenge you. Tonight, at 10 o'clock. If I win, we keep Merry. If you win..." he swallowed hard. "If you win, I'll leave the crew."
"Usopp, no!" Chopper cried.
"Don't do this," Nojiko pleaded.
But Luffy just nodded, his expression grim. "Ten o'clock. The beach south of the shipyard."
Without another word, Usopp turned and left the room. They could hear him gathering his things from below deck.
As soon as he was gone, Luffy seemed to deflate slightly. Vivi and Nami moved to his sides, while Robin wrapped her arms around him from behind.
"You don't have to do this," Nami whispered.
"Yes, I do." Luffy closed his eyes. "A crew can't function without absolute trust in their captain. And he doesn't trust me anymore."
"He's grieving," Robin said softly. "People say things they don't mean when they're hurting."
"No," Luffy shook his head. "He meant it. He's been holding onto that since Mock Town. This isn't just about Merry anymore."
The storm continued to rage outside, but now it felt less angry and more sorrowful. Like the sky itself was crying for the fracturing of their family.
"What are your orders, Captain?" Zoro asked formally.
"I will prepare for the duel," Luffy said quietly. "No one interferes, no matter what happens."
As the crew dispersed to their tasks, Luffy remained standing at the broken window, staring out at the storm. The scars on his arm - Akainu's parting gift - seemed to burn anew with Usopp's accusations.
Perhaps the sniper was right - perhaps it was all his fault. But that didn't change what needed to be done. He'd promised himself after Mock Town that he would never risk his crew like that again. Even if it meant losing a friend.
The storm clouds grew darker over Water 7, promising a night that would change the Straw Hat Pirates forever.
