Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: The Hardships of Growing Up

"Master Li must be holding a grudge against my father now, right? Are you planning to report us to the authorities as soon as we leave?" Gu Nian sneered, "But, I advise you not to. My second brother's injuries are much worse than yours, and you were the ones at fault to begin with. Even if we go to the authorities, it's uncertain who will be at a disadvantage. As the old saying goes, those who have nothing to lose don't fear those who do. My father is the pillar of our family, if the pillar falls, the house will collapse; if it kills several people when it collapses, they can only blame their bad luck, don't you think?"

Undeniably, this was indeed what Master Li had been thinking just moments ago, yet upon hearing Gu Nian's words, a sudden chill ran through him despite the scorching heat.

Looking at the girl in front of him—young in age with an innocent face—but her words were as sharp as ice blades, each one capable of causing mortal harm.

Master Li suddenly recalled a tragic incident he had heard of days ago. It was said that a village drowned a woman who bore a child out of wedlock, and that woman had a son, only a few years old, who put several packs of rat poison into the village's only well at night, claiming more than a dozen lives from the village.

It was said that the murderous child had been on the run for many days and still hadn't been caught.

Are children nowadays all such demons?

His thoughts of revenge were instantly disrupted, scattered to the winds, with not a trace left.

Dahu had already walked out the door but didn't see Gu Nian following, calling out, "Little sis, what are you doing?"

"I'm coming, big brother, wait for me." Gu Nian changed her gloomy demeanor, straightening up with a radiant smile like blossoming peach flowers, lively and bright.

Master Li watched the little girl change her face as quickly as flipping a book, further convinced in his mind that Gu Nian was a demon.

Ahead, as soon as Gu Nian came out, Dahu quickly grabbed the bucket filled with pig innards, not forgetting to ask her, "Little sis, what took you so long back there?"

"Nothing much, I was just reasoning with that uncle back there, telling him not to wrongfully accuse others in the future." Gu Nian cheerfully grabbed the meat strung on hemp rope and skipped to chase after Lin Sanshui.

Dahu couldn't help but smile.

She really is a child, her thoughts are simple.

Someone as selfish as Master Li won't be persuaded with just a few words.

Adults have many worries; everywhere in this world, there's scheming and plotting. He himself experienced it in the tavern.

Spent silver and flattered others to become an apprentice, yet the master was wary of him stealing skills, only letting him do simple tasks. Others were also guarded, if he wasn't outstanding he'd get scolded, but if he was, he'd be squeezed out.

Dahu shook his head, trying to shake off these troubling thoughts.

Only when he was home could he completely relax, without needing to flatter anyone or fear offending anyone.

Gu Nian had already reached Lin Sanshui's side, "Dad, the road home is still long, why not rent a cattle cart?"

Renting a cattle cart costs several big coins. Normally, Lin Sanshui would certainly be unwilling to.

But today's situation is special, there's money in hand and no worry, plus his son is injured. He simply stood still, waited for Dahu to catch up and said, "Dahu, Dad is taking Erhu to the clinic ahead to see the doctor, you go rent a cattle cart, we will wait for you by the clinic entrance."

Lin Sanshui carried Erhu and couldn't reach for silver easily, so he simply asked Dahu to pay himself.
