[Oil can only be extracted manually. Initially, we could gather together and collect it, selling the crude oil to those who wanted it, although they didn't know what for, in exchange for a large amount of food, water, and some tools.
I've lost track of how many disasters we've been through, but the total population has dropped to less than thirty million. I don't know if that's fast or slow, but I think humanity is quite resilient.
Our Shelter is located about two kilometers away from the oil field, and we've chosen to build it underground rather than above ground.
Above ground isn't safe, and buildings wouldn't likely survive the upcoming hurricane disasters.
