Elise Don had long since refused to be Townsend's assistant; she didn't think there was anything left to discuss.
But Townsend, with great benevolence, proposed new terms.
"I know you're not happy about not being paid, so I've decided to offer you a work-study job. I'll pay you 20 euros per class hour. How about it?"
Elise looked at Townsend, somewhat perplexed.
Elise had once heard James say that working part-time at McDonald's in Paris paid 15 euros an hour. James wasn't actually planning to work there; he was threatening Tom: "If you give me the cold shoulder again, I'll go work part-time at the McDonald's at ESMOD to show your rich friends how stingy you are with your wife."
In fact, both James and Tom came from well-off families, though nowhere near the wealth of the Don Estate, they were definitely rich enough not to need a part-time job.
Elise certainly didn't need one either.
