Here's a fully developed Chapter 6 (~2000+ words) where Ying Yue begins to suspect Yi Chen's hidden power. I've amplified tension, subtle humor, and worldbuilding, while keeping the slow-burn master-disciple dynamic.
Chapter 6
Hidden Power
Ying Yue walked back to her small rented room, her arms carrying baskets of herbs she had gathered from the edge of the forest. The sun was dipping lower in the sky, casting long shadows over the base. Despite the effort, her mind remained restless. Something about the man who had appeared at the river earlier didn't sit right with her.
He was strange… and far too calm when he saved that beast without even trying.
Little White hopped onto her shoulder, his small blue eyes glinting with curiosity.
"Master, why do you look so tense?" he whispered.
"I'm not tense," Ying Yue said quickly, though her voice lacked conviction. She narrowed her eyes at the patch of forest they had just exited. "I just… don't trust that man."
Little White tilted his head. "But he saved you."
"Yes, but saving me doesn't mean he's normal. He—" she hesitated, thinking back to how the giant wolf had fallen dead without a scratch on its body. "He could've killed that beast with just a flick of his finger. And he didn't even sweat."
That was impossible…
Ying Yue's mind raced. In all the cultivation records she had read, even a high-level disciple could not defeat a level-three spirit beast without some real effort. Yet the man had dispatched it as if it were nothing.
And the way he followed me… he's hiding something. He's definitely hiding something.
Shaking her head, she tried to dismiss the thought.
"Let's just focus on getting the herbs back to mom's room," she muttered to herself, though Little White noticed the tension in her shoulders.
As they neared the small wooden hut she shared with her mother, the faint smell of cooking drifted through the air. Her mother was already tending to a pot of rice porridge, a smile on her face despite the long day.
"Yueyue!" her mother called warmly, seeing her daughter approach. "You're back earlier than I expected. Did you gather enough herbs?"
Ying Yue placed the baskets down and carefully unpacked her haul. "Yes, and I even found a few extra medicinal herbs I think will help your cultivation," she said, attempting to hide her lingering unease.
Her mother looked at her curiously. "Extra herbs? That's excellent. You've grown stronger since your last mission."
"Mom, don't call it that," Ying Yue said lightly. "It's nothing special."
Little White scurried around her feet, sniffing the baskets and giving a little hop of approval. "Master, these smell good! Are they for me too?"
Ying Yue rolled her eyes. "Not everything is for you." She glanced out the small window, noticing the shadows stretching across the village streets. The evening breeze carried the scent of cooked food and wood smoke, but beneath it, a faint tension lingered. Something was… off.
He's out there somewhere, she thought silently.
A few minutes later, a sharp knocking echoed through the hut. Ying Yue's mother glanced toward the door.
"I'll get it," Ying Yue muttered, striding over with a scowl.
The door swung open to reveal the familiar, impatient face of the middle-aged landlady. She was holding her large wooden bowl, her hands stained with flour from earlier cooking.
"You! Back so soon, huh?" the woman said, frowning. "I hope you're not planning to skip rent again this month. I want my rice."
Ying Yue straightened, her lips pressed together. "We'll pay the rice owed. Just give us a little more time, please."
The landlady's eyes narrowed. "Time? How many months have you been delaying now?"
Ying Yue's mother intervened softly, but Ying Yue placed a hand gently on her shoulder, signaling her to stay quiet. She reached into her space, pulling out the precise amount of rice needed, and carefully poured it into the woman's bowl.
"Here. Exact measurement," Ying Yue said with a steady voice.
The landlady's expression shifted from anger to surprise. "Where did you get this?!"
Ying Yue smiled faintly. "Don't worry about it. Just take it."
The woman snatched the bowl and stomped away, muttering under her breath.
Once the door closed, Little White peered up at her. "Master… that woman didn't see you use your space ability, right?"
Ying Yue shook her head. "No. And she can never know. I can't risk it."
Abilities like this are dangerous to reveal. People will try to capture or exploit you if they find out.
She set the herbs aside and sat next to her mother, who looked at her curiously.
"You seem… distracted. Is something wrong?"
Ying Yue forced a calm smile. "No, mom. I'm just tired from walking through the forest. That's all."
Her mother narrowed her eyes, sensing that something was off but wisely choosing not to push.
As night fell, the hut grew quiet. Ying Yue lay on her bed, Little White curled beside her in his tiny space. Outside, the village seemed peaceful, but Ying Yue could feel the faint tension in the air.
She remembered the man—Yi Chen—and how effortlessly he had handled the spirit beast. He's far stronger than he lets on.
She shook her head. "No. That can't be. Maybe I'm imagining things. Maybe it was just a coincidence."
Little White spoke in her mind again. "Master… he's definitely hiding his power. You saw what he did to the wolf."
Ying Yue rolled her eyes. "Yes, Little White, I saw it. You don't have to remind me every five seconds."
But her mind couldn't ignore the truth. Every detail from earlier kept replaying in her head: the calm expression, the precise movements, the way the beast fell without a scratch on its exterior.
He's not just strong… he's on another level entirely.
The next morning, Ying Yue woke early, as was her habit, and prepared breakfast for her mother. She carefully made three bowls of porridge with vegetables she had exchanged from the market earlier. One bowl she placed in front of her mother; the other two she stored in her space for later.
Her mother stirred, blinking awake. "Where are you going so early?"
"I want to leave early and finish my mission before it gets too hot," Ying Yue replied. "I've already made breakfast for you. Eat before it cools."
Her mother nodded and began to eat while Ying Yue packed her bag with supplies from her space.
"This is the last bag of rice I have. You can make lunch with it," she added. "I'll be back before you know it."
"Why don't I go with you and help you?" her mother asked.
"There's no need. I can manage," Ying Yue said, smiling reassuringly.
Her mother hesitated, then nodded. "Okay… be careful."
Ying Yue left the house quietly, carrying Little White in one hand and the bag of rice in the other. As they reached the city gate, she observed the people preparing to leave. Flying birds, used for travel, flapped in cages, and merchants were shouting over prices.
When I get money, I should really buy one of those… it would make travel so much easier, she thought.
She moved toward the mission center, trying to ignore the whispers in her mind from Little White.
At the mission center, she quickly scanned the available missions. Most were mundane: cleaning, cooking, tending livestock. Her blue eyes, however, caught a glint of a more interesting mission—gathering herbs at the forest edge.
She signed up, taking care not to draw attention to her space abilities. As she left, an older man who had helped her mother before approached her.
"You're going out alone?" he asked with concern.
"Yes," Ying Yue replied calmly.
"It's dangerous. Why not join us? We're heading into the death forest to hunt a level-four spirit beast. You can come along."
Ying Yue considered this, weighing the risk. "I'm only gathering herbs at the edge. I won't go deep into the forest. I have my abilities, and I can protect myself."
The man handed her a yellow paper talisman. "Just in case, tear this if you're in danger. It will teleport you two kilometers away to safety. Think about where you want to go when you use it."
Ying Yue took it gratefully. "Thank you. I'll be careful."
She moved into the forest, careful to avoid making noise. Little White peeked from her shoulder.
"Master, aren't you supposed to stay near the edge?" he asked.
"I know, but I also need to gather herbs for myself. Don't worry, I'll be careful."
As they collected herbs and fruits, Ying Yue noticed the forest's serene beauty. Clear streams trickled between the trees, sunlight dappled the mossy ground, and birds sang overhead. Yet, even in this calm, she remained alert.
Something is always lurking… something we can't see yet.
After some time, she reached a clear river. Its waters were pure and inviting. She decided to rest, setting down her herbs and removing her shoes to feel the cool water.
Just as she began to wash her hands, a soft voice called from behind.
"Disciple?"
Ying Yue spun around, heart racing. Standing there was Yi Chen.
"AAAah! Get out, you pervert!" she screamed, throwing her herbs aside.
Yi Chen froze. "I—I just came to make sure you're safe."
"You call standing behind me while I bathe safe?"
Yi Chen looked away, embarrassed, yet maintained his calm expression. He didn't dare reveal the slightest hint of the immense cultivation power he had suppressed.
Ying Yue quickly dressed and glared at him. "Who are you really? You're hiding something."
Yi Chen smiled faintly. "Maybe I am. Maybe I'm not. But I mean no harm."
Little White jumped onto her hand. "Master, he's hiding something! Don't trust him!"
Ying Yue ignored him. She kept her gaze locked on Yi Chen.
"You're far stronger than you pretend," she said, her tone suspicious.
Yi Chen's expression remained calm, but a small arc of amusement flickered across his lips. So perceptive. My disciple never changes.
"Perhaps," he said softly. "Perhaps I am. Or perhaps you just have a good eye."
Ying Yue's blue eyes narrowed. She didn't like being outsmarted—or feeling powerless in someone else's presence.
"Stay out of my way," she warned. "I don't need a bodyguard."
"I wouldn't dream of it," Yi Chen said. And for a moment, the air between them was tense—but also strangely… familiar.
Little White hopped onto Yi Chen's shoulder and whispered, "Master… you should stay near us. He's your master now, right?"
Ying Yue groaned. "Little White! Sit still!"
Yi Chen only chuckled silently.
This will be interesting, he thought. I'll let her think I'm weak…
