Chapter 9 - My Sweetheart Psycho (3)

The snow falls gently on the city turning to grey ice on the roads and pavements. The snow just can't seem to settle. Unlike me who's been here for months and I've gotten used to my life in this city. At first I was overwhelmed having to start a life in such a crowded busy place after spending all my life living in the country. But now it was coming close to half a year being lost in the middle of an unfamiliar place, full of strangers and with an ever growing threat of death.

I was lying on my bed checking all my system screens. Still nothing had changed. I would have been lying on the couch in the apartment but I'd torn it to pieces making things for my inventory. You see I figured out that I was able to put things in my inventory if I crafted them myself. So I'd spent quite a bit of time trying to make various things that would increase my chances of survival. The novel may force me to do things but the inventory is outside of the novel, I intend to exploit this fact. I had crafted the 2 wooden stakes as well as 2 stakes that I wrapped in fabric and some stuffing that I could light as torches if need be. I made a few rudimentary knives using things like razor blades and large broken bits of glass. Unfortunately I'm not that creative or smart so I was limited in what I could craft to help me.

I got up and headed out it was my day off today and Lawrence and I had made plans to go running. We had agreed to meet at the park entrance right now so I waited... And I waited... And I kept waiting but I had waited for hours and she hadn't shown yet. I decided to finally call her (I didn't want to do that originally because I thought it would seem needy) it rang a few times and failed so I tried again. It clicked, being suspicious I waited until she said something, it was dead silent for a while but then I could hear breathing.

'Who is this?' An unfamiliar female voice said.

I had to keep my composure. 'Hi there, I'm trying to reach detective Lawrence. is she there with you now?'

... Click.

Well that's not good.

I sprinted to the police station to tell them what happened and all the while I couldn't stop thinking about the dead girl that I had seen and I couldn't help but think about Lawrence lifeless like that.

I had to stand back and let them try and find her. I wished I could do more but at this stage all I was doing was getting in the way. After the third time I had been asked if I wanted to go home and let them handle it I relented. My hands couldn't stop shaking. My heart wasn't slowing down. My throat kept closing up and feeling unfamiliar to me.

Exercising did nothing to calm me. I laid down on my bed hoping to relax but it all persisted.

*Ring Ring* *Ring Ring*

I guess I had managed to sleep without realising. My phone showed a number I didn't recognise. Wiping my eyes and yawning I pick up.

'Hi, who is this?' I say between yawning

'You phoned me earlier about detective Lawrence.'

Oh crap!

'Yeah I did! What happened?!'

'She was sticking her nose in my business! That's what happened!'

'Well is she there with you? Can I come pick her up?'

'Aww that's sweet! Yeah OK let me get you the address so you can join- I mean pick her up.'

I was too worried to listen to the mistake she made and I ran out of the apartment after taking the address down on my hand.

Night was falling and the snow was falling harder. I ran and ran the snow kept clinging to my face making it hard to see but I finally got there. It was the damn school again. I fished the phone from my pocket and turned on the light. The front door was unlocked which was really weird. I checked the first floor but there was no sign of life. I went up a floor and when I got to the classroom where the girl was killed I swear I could hear voices. I had to pluck up the courage to go in this room that had been the biggest component in all my recent nightmares. Opening the door and stepping inside I saw Lawrence against the wall clutching her side looking pretty bad. I ran over to her to make sure she was OK and the door closed behind me with a loud bang. I turn around and standing there is a teenage girl brandishing a knife. It's hard to make out her features because of how dark it is but I can still tell that she's really angry about something. I reach to my side for my gun but don't find it. I can't believe I left it at home! I turn to Lawrence and when she sees my expression she moves her head over to the left side of the room and when I squint enough I can see her pistol on the ground.

I need to wait for my moment, if I go to grab it now and this killer sees this situation could end up a lot worse.

'Ooh looks like someone forgot their gun! Some rescuer you turned out to be!' The figure in front of me joked and sneered.

A force passed over me again forcing me to stand up and move over to her.

'Wow a real knight in shining armour! Sorry I must have ruined one of you guy's dates. Well your girlfriend over there started it when she tracked me down and ruined my date with my boyfriend!'

It's a shame I don't know any martial arts because that's exactly what a character in this situation would do. Officer Bell moved too quick to react and a wooden stake found its way into the killers thigh, it seemed to just appear in his hand from thin air. Now time for all that shooting practice to come in handy as I dive for the pistol.

But the force stops me from firing so I kick a chair into the killer instead. Seems like something is stopping me from winning this fight. The knife from the girls hand is thrown through the air at Lawrence, luckily the force doesn't stop me this time as I manage to shoot the knife away with what seems to be pinpoint accuracy but is really just dumb luck. I turn the gun on this crazy girl and realise the force is now completely gone...

The bullet I fire hits her in the chest and she bends over retching up blood. I go over to Lawrence and support her in my arms as I carry her out of this school.

'Sorry for not showing earlier.' She says in a raspy voice.

'It's fine. Raincheck?'

The world finally scrolls back up around me.
