Chapter 51 - Keep Going

After a consultation with the doctor where a very painful process with a so-called 'local anesthetic' to make it less painful was carried out, Doryoku's hand was now fine.

Well as far as it went, since he was in more pain now than before and he could move it a lot less, but at least now his fingers were red and not purple and his hand was almost completely bandaged.

In addition to that, he also had to drink a full bottle of serum that is given to small children when they vomit a lot, this in order to recover the nutrients and liquids in large quantities that Kanbatsu's quirk took away from him, it should be noted that it tasted horrible.

'I hate hospitals' thought Doryoku quite pained as he sat in a rather uncomfortable chair in the corridors using his backpack to make himself as comfortable as possible.

There was a moment in which Doryoku had a very hard time, and although the whole process was quite painful, the moment in which he was told the price of his consultation made him much more tense.

Even so, Last laser decided to pay for the consultation, something that for Doryoku was more than enough for him not to feel that he owed him something.

But still, Last laser said that it was nothing really and the debt would be paid when the time comes.

This made Doryoku feel relieved for two things, 1 he didn't have to make his mother spend more money on him and 2 apparently the hero career paid better than he thought.

As Doryoku tried to move his hand little by little as the doctor told him and continued to ramble, he suddenly felt someone sit next to him.

"What theft, I could have cured myself with alcohol, but apparently they have the need to cure everything they see and get money from me" Last laser said, letting out several complaints while he had some small bandages on his torso and face.

"Mmmmm, medicine huh? Wouldn't have been a bad choice from what I heard, but just imagining the guts uhhhh" Doryoku said pondering the idea of studying medicine for a moment and getting a shiver almost instantly.

"Meh, you get used to it eventually" Last laser said with a shrug for reasons Doryoku didn't want to know.

"By the way, the information regarding our last adventure is already on the news" Last laser said suddenly remembering what he saw on television while Doryoku listened attentively.

"20 years, that for which you stopped, the one that I stopped will be 30 years in jail at least" Last laser said calmly while Doryoku looked very confused.

"20 years? But if the sentence for murder is a maximum of 8" Doryoku said in shock and thinking that he was making a mistake.

"Didn't you know? The fine for using your quirk without a license for so long is much heavier than murder" Last laser said, still quite calm and with an explanatory tone.

"Don't be surprised, remember what I told you about the world wanting to keep the peace at all costs? Well, a murderer is quite common actually, it could be any relatively normal person, but someone who ran from the law and whose quirk is very strong will always be imprisoned for much longer, all for peace" Last laser said not very surprised, although he did seem a little dissatisfied by this.

"A life is worth much less than peace?" asked Doryoku getting the point instantly as usual and quite disappointed, receiving a nod from Last laser.

"Maybe it's sad but that's how it works, the last time a life was worth more than peace... Well, there's a whole historical war behind it" Last laser said being realistic as always and making Doryoku nod understanding, but also bumping into reality.

"Even so, you are not the world and the world is not only you, you are a single and insignificant person, and as long as you don't take the rest of the world with you, there is really no problem" Last laser said with a serious and quite experienced tone.

"If it's just you and for you a life is worth more than peace, that's not bad, because it will be something that makes you happy and that doesn't affect the world negatively or hurt someone" Last laser said digressing a bit too while Doryoku lent attention.

"Even so, other points of view must always be taken into account, although you already know that, don't you?" Last laser said looking at Doryoku as he nodded slightly smiling.

"Ohh, I have one last question if you don't mind Laser-sensei" Doryoku said remembering something he vaguely thought after his battle.

"Go ahead ask" Last laser said with a bit of curiosity actually to know Doryoku's question.

"If I had to find a reason to do what I do and even if I'm an exception, why were those villains so empty?" Doryoku said with a rather confused and somewhat rambling tone while Last laser could already imagine where the topic was going.

"Even though they tried so hard, one of them was just following orders and even though I'm not sure about Kanbatsu it seemed pretty weird to me" Doryoku said remembering the little conversations he was able to have with both of them.

"There are several ways to encompass this, but I'll put it in the simplest way... Everyone is where they must be either now or eventually" Last laser said with an explanatory tone and straight to the point.

"If that man you say was an instructor, it's because he was trustworthy and knew how to follow orders just like the guy I faced, who always took into account his own mistakes" Last laser said also remembering their battle slightly while Doryoku listened attentively.

"Not all villains have a reason, some do it for simple survival, others out of greed, malice, etc. And you always have to keep in mind that those who are 'unique' are either at the top, or on the way, or they're not directly part of that" Last laser said calmly as always, with a quite interesting point of view for Doryoku as always.

"Is the world unfair? Yes, and a lot, but if this civilization has lasted so long without extreme changes, it's because something is being done right, you just have to know how to follow the path and-" Last laser said as he continued explaining and was cut off suddenly by Doryoku.

"Being part of the world huh? As you can imagine I'm not very good at it" Doryoku said with a slightly nervous smile instantly understanding how it was as usual.

Last laser let out a light sigh, and then he settled down a bit in his chair and said...

"Well, it was a good internship despite of everything and you learned the most important thing which is why you should help others, I doubt that I can teach you something else besides some techniques or tricks" Last laser said with a thoughtful tone, since in reality there wasn't much more to teach at least not very important.

"Do you want me to give you a score or not?" Last laser said with a bit of curiosity.

"No thanks, I'm sure my wound will be one point less" Doryoku said with a tired smile knowing perfectly well what his score was as he pointed to his right hand and Last laser nodded confirming his suspicions.

"Well, I don't have a place to receive you and I'll probably have to ask Command to let me sleep in his couch, so that's the end of the internships" Last laser said without actually looking very hurt since he hadn't lost something invaluable to his eyes.

"I have a lot to investigate too, so I recommend you go home, rest is almost always the best way to process everything learned" Last laser said getting up from his seat and walking towards the exit of the place as usual.

But before he left, Last Laser turned around one last time and said...

"It was quite entertaining boy, thanks for risking so much for that hummingbird and so far... It's been a pleasure teaching you" Last laser said smiling slightly, then left the place and disappeared from sight.

And Doryoku could only say that, it was also a pleasure to learn, as he smiled slightly as well.

[A few days later] [Friday—11:00 a.m.]

After everything that happened a few days ago, and reassuring his mother after she saw Doryoku's wound, he was walking down the street calmly.

There were only two days left of his 'vacations' which were very unorthodox, but after that madness they helped a lot.

Doryoku was walking leisurely since the market was a bit far, more or less following the usual path to the UA, so it was even quicker to get to it when knowing the way.

It should be noted that his hand was still bandaged, since under a somewhat overprotective mother and a son who always expected the worst, there could never be a risky result in the least, so that bandage would be there until his hand is better than new

Doryoku looked around noticing things that he never paid attention to, like a big gray cat with blue eyes that was quite cute, although he decided to focus on the road and not be like a certain airhead.

After arriving at the market and buying the necessities for lunch and dinner, Doryoku go out of it and started walking back home, until...

"Meow" a slight meow was heard next to him and when Doryoku looked to that side with curiosity he found that little white cat of always.

"Wow, you get along well with being a stray" Doryoku said quite impressed seeing how that little cat had a very good orientation.

The UA was still a long way off, and to think that this little feline knew this entire area perfectly was quite curious.

Doryoku calmly approached and crouched down without letting his shopping bag touch the ground, then lightly petted the little cat, who seemed quite happy.

Just then, a question flashed through Doryoku's mind, one he wasn't sure he wanted to check.

He put his shopping bag down on the cleanest spot that he could see and then... activated his quirk through his bracelet.

'Well, let's see what happens' Doryoku thought quite nervously actually, but not wanting to remain in doubt.

He reached out his hand slightly, and even though he was still trembling, now it wasn't as exaggerated as before.

Doryoku was able to get his hand to within inches of the small animal with almost no difficulty, but those last few inches still scared him a little.

This took a deep breath and tried to calm down to continue, but was interrupted as the little cat suddenly brought its head closer to his hand.

Doryoku tensed almost instantly at this, but seeing that nothing bad had happened, he lightly stroked the feline.

And seeing that nothing bad had happened, he could only have a happy proud smile thanks to his advance.

Doryoku petted the feline a bit and moved his hand away from him a bit, though the latter seemed a little confused for some reason.

"I know right? It sure felt weird, it was a joooke" Doryoku said making jazz hands after using his quirk on the cat to confuse him, receiving a hit from the little cat's paw.

"Hehe, you're very vindictive" Doryoku said with a light laugh, before saying goodbye to the little cat, taking his bag and going home.

"See you at school bud" Doryoku said as he deactivated his quirk, this time because he seemed more comfortable and not because he was scared for the first time.

"Meow" said the little cat wagging his tail happily as he waved goodbye to him.

One step forward... the last one perhaps? The only thing he was sure of was that he had to keep going.

At High Command's home, Last laser was sitting on the sofa in the living room with a pillow to sleep while he found his laptop and put it on his lap.

"Let's see, what are you doing now old man?" Last laser said rather cautiously, as he began a little investigation.
