Mini-Arc: Meeting the Campbell Family
____________________
I had just returned with Lecia from our secret trip to a resort in the Commonwealth.
It was an excellent trip. Since we returned separately so no one would notice—not even Ixion—we decided to have tea one last time.
I planned to go home tomorrow after this trip, so I was enjoying my last moments with her.
While we were having tea, a maid exclusive to Lecia handed me a letter.
"How strange, I got a letter?"
"Why is it strange for you to receive letters?"
"Because no one sends me letters, except my fiancées; not even my family does. Besides, only they should know I'm here."
Lecia was also alert to the mysterious letter.
"Does it have a sender?"
"Yes, let me see…"
"Huh? That's weird, I don't know this surname."
"Who is the letter from?" she said before I could tell her.
"It says it's from the Campbell family and that they request a dinner at their house if I agree. Do you know them?"
I looked at Lecia for answers, and the expression on her face left me very astonished.
"I know them, but that's the strange thing. That family generally doesn't associate with almost anyone."
"Are they hostile?" I asked, very curious, since usually only an enemy would send me a letter, but she shook her head.
"Of course not, in fact they are very pleasant. You're more likely to have Siegwald point a gun at you before the Marquis does."
That brought me horrible memories of when I was alone with him; he seemed to want to hit me for some reason. But back to what she said:
"A Marquis? What does a family of marquises want with me?"
"It says it's a dinner, right? Surely they want to get to know you. It's a good opportunity for you to expand your social circle."
"I really like that my social circle is small and filled with mostly trustworthy people."
The trash that is Leonis and Siegwald came to mind when thinking about that circle.
"Don't be silly," she exclaimed, placing her chin on her arms on the table.
"Currently you are a man who will receive much more attention now than before; it suits you to have more connections with trustworthy people. I guarantee it, the Campbell's are a great family, so much so that even I envy them."
"Well, if you say so, I'll give them a chance."
"Can you tell me a little more about them?"
"Sure."
Lecia began to tell me several details that amazed me.
To start, they are a merchant family that began by selling fish, and today they could be considered almost a multinational, since they sell everything except weapons. Apparently, the head of the house's policy is "zero weapons," which is strange because in this violent world it's better to be armed and teach your children to use a rifle; my father taught me to use one when I turned six and I still keep it in my room.
She also talked about the five families that have secret blood of the royal family, and only one of them can take the position left by the Kingsfort's. I know all of them except two families: The Tudors and the Easton's. The other two are the Frazer's and the Roseblaire's. Only the Campbell's remain as candidates, but the current head says he doesn't want to, though if his son decides to, that's another matter. Apparently, the palace is trying to fill the hole they left. They managed to reintegrate the Talis into the kingdom, but they don't recognize them as such.
Also, the Easton´s lost their heir Curtis in the war and need to produce another heir as soon as possible.
As a very interesting curiosity, the Roseblaire's and the Campbell's share the same coat of arms of roses with swords, but Ellen's family has thorny roots and the Campbell's don't.
After telling me that, Lecia became thoughtful. I told the maid that I accepted the invitation and to inform the messenger; the dinner would be one day after accepting the letter. I went to see her.
"Is something wrong?"
"Hey, Rudel-kun, can I go to the dinner with you?"
"Huh? Go with me? But you are…"
"Don't misunderstand. I'll go in disguise; obviously it would be bad for us to be seen together, but I'm very curious about that invitation. The Campbell's don't make decisions so lightly. They may be pleasant people, but they are merchants; everything they do and say is meticulously planned."
"If that's the case, you shouldn't go, don't you think?"
"That's true. But it's more than anything an interest in something, please."
Seeing her begging me with that pretty face of hers, I couldn't refuse.
"Alright. I'll tell Ixion to prepare a disguise for you."
"Don't worry, I have my own disguises for the occasion."
She said, winking at me. It felt weird how she said it, as if it wasn't the first time she'd done something like this.
◇
On the night of the next day, the Campbell family carriage came to pick me up for dinner. I told Ixion to follow us in invisible mode for security, and because I didn't want him to see me talking with Lecia.
"Really, it's a great disguise."
"Do you like it? It's from my time when I was an apprentice to the head maid. Naturally, it became too small for me, but I made several adjustments to wear it again."
"The adjustments are very noticeable."
I said while looking at the beautiful Lecia dressed as a Victorian maid.
Her hair was black from a dye and she had it tied up in a classic maid's cap; she also wore glasses that hid the blue color of her eyes, changing it to green.
No one could recognize her, but those enormous attributes gave her away a lot.
Before I knew it, we arrived at the Campbell mansion.
The neighborhood was one of the most luxurious in the capital; normally only very rich families can have a house here. Duke Bismarck once showed me his house—it wasn't in this direction—but all the houses were the same reddish color; the houses in this area, however, are white.
The light from the street lamps came on because it was already the time when most people went out to have fun.
"Let's review my role: I am your exclusive maid assigned to you by the Prime Minister."
"I know, you don't have to tell me."
"Sorry, it's just that I remembered that idiot husband of mine when we had meetings with diplomats from other countries and he forgot where he was."
"It must be difficult to deal with him."
"It is."
She expressed her honesty with an aggressive tone of voice, while I rang the bell.
"Although there's something that bothers me."
"What is it?"
"With such a beautiful woman, they won't believe you're my maid, but my lover."
"Beautiful!?"
She was so embarrassed that she covered her red cheeks and then began to murmur while her body seemed to shrink.
"This kind of role-play isn't that bad. In fact, I think it might work."
The door opened and a butler came out to greet us.
He had neatly combed black hair and brown eyes; his appearance was standard for a butler.
"Good evening, how may I help you?"
His manners were excellent too.
I introduced myself and showed him the letter.
"Good evening, I am Marquis Bradford, a pleasure. I was invited here—"
"Marquis Bradford!? I am terribly sorry!"
"Huh?"
He began to apologize for some reason.
"I am very sorry, but the dinner had a setback and cannot be finished on time. If it is not an inconvenience, please wait in the resting room."
"No problem."
"I deeply apologize for making you wait, and thank you for your generosity. And who is she, may I know?"
Seriously, this guy's manners are excellent; they are on par with Felicia's, but he treats me better.
"She is… Letty, my exclusive maid while I am in the capital; the Prime Minister assigned her to my care."
"A pleasure, I am Letty."
"I understand, likewise a pleasure. Please, come in."
"Ah, how rude of me not to have introduced myself earlier. I am the head butler of the Campbell House, Edmund Bartley."
"Pleased to meet you."
After the introductions, we entered the house and were directed to a separate room.
"This place is very luxurious."
For a resting room, it wasn't bad at all.
It's better than the one in the palace: it has more space, more furniture, and even a fireplace; the palace room was the complete opposite.
From the window I could see Ixion waiting for orders; I greeted him and he hid. I wondered if he would analyze the food for poison, and I said no, since Lecia trusts them.
While we waited, I asked Lecia:
"There's something you didn't tell me."
"What is it?"
"How is it that they allowed a family of counts to become marquises? As far as I remember, rising to count is difficult, and a marquis is much harder."
"That's simple. And I'm surprised Alisa didn't tell you."
"The reason they are a marquis family is because the current head married the daughter of a duke, who was Bismarck."
I was speechless hearing that.
"Does that mean Alisa and the Campbell's are family?"
"That's right, at least on her mother's side they are related to the Bismarck's."
That is truly amazing, but even more amazing is that someone linked to Duke Bismarck would request a dinner with me. For some reason, my stomach started to hurt.
"But there is a drawback," she said with a serious expression.
"Due to that union, one day a problem arose between the current head of the Campbell's and the Duke's family, managing to destroy their bond, and now both families are at odds."
I didn't need her to tell me more.
"I guess: Alisa's grandfather wanted to have them as vassals through a political marriage, but he refused and that's why they broke ties, right?"
(That's why I don't fully trust Siegwald; he has the look of a true politician.)
Lecia immediately shattered my answer with hers.
"Wrong. You're not off, but you're not close."
"The Bismarck's wanted them to be their exclusive merchants, which would mean the Campbell's would lose their other clients. The one who protested was the wife of the current head, and she severed ties with her family because she didn't want to harm her new family."
"Really? I couldn't imagine that."
"That's why I told you the Campbell's are a family to envy; there is true love in them."
"Without a doubt, the Bismarck's are terrible. I love Alisa and I really like Vayne, but I definitely don't want to be alone in a room with Siegwald."
(Mainly because now I can confirm the Bismarck's would go after Ixion; Alisa will legally have power over him, but her father is another story.)
(Or rather, if Ixion would allow it.)
I looked at Lecia's face, who was pouting.
"I understand you love Alisa, but what about me?"
"Good heavens, you are a woman who really seeks to be pampered."
Lecia felt jealous hearing me say I loved Alisa, but I love her and the others too.
I gave her a kiss on the cheek after standing up; she pointed to the other cheek and I gave her a kiss.
Then she leaned her lips forward and I gave her a kiss on the mouth.
"You know, that last kiss was really unnecessary; it started putting me in a very good mood."
"I'd like to do it now if possible."
Before touching her chest, someone knocked on the door.
"Marquis Bradford, dinner is ready."
The door opened and I ran to my seat, pretending to drink tea she was serving me.
"Dinner is ready, you can come eat now."
"I-I understand, thank you very much for the notice."
"Are you sweating? Do you have a fever perhaps?"
Butler Edmund asked me because my forehead was soaked with sweat.
"O-of course not, it's just that this tea is very hot."
The tea was iced, but I needed to pretend.
"I understand, I will bring you another tea after dinner."
"N-no, this one is fine. Just leave it like that."
We got up and went with the butler.
It was time to meet the Campbell's.
◇
When we arrived at the dining room, what I saw seemed unreal.
It was the typical scene seen in old movies about elegant families of the 20th century: men and women with fine and elegant garments, similar to royalty.
They all had white skin and blonde hair with blue eyes.
The head of the family, a man who must have been over thirty according to Lecia, but who actually looked to be in his twenties, stood before me.
"It is a pleasure to meet you, Marquis Bradford. I am the head of the Campbell family, Marquis Edgar Von Campbell."
"Pleased to meet you, I am Marquis Rudel Von Bradford."
His wife and children approached to greet me.
"It is a pleasure to finally meet you. I am the lady of this house, Belinda Von Campbell."
Lecia wasn't lying; the Marquis's wife was undoubtedly a relative of the Bismarck's.
Same golden hair and rabbit-like red eyes; she also possessed a great cleavage, but does that have something to do with Alisa?
A tall boy like Bram also greeted me.
"It is a pleasure to meet you, Marquis, I truly mean it. I am the only male in the family, Lionel Von Campbell."
"Umm, may I ask why there are so many dishes if we are only this group of people?"
I was disturbed by the excess of dishes, but before they could answer my question, I was attacked by an animal.
It was a large golden dog; it reminded me a lot of the one from that movie with a composer's name, Saint Bernard or something like that?
"Leomel, let him go now!"
A small voice exclaimed.
The enormous dog went towards a girl Paula's age and sat next to her.
"I am very sorry about that, Marquis. Leomel is just playful; he likes to meet new people," exclaimed Marquis Campbell apologetically.
"It's alright, it surprised me a lot. Actually, I like animals, and I recently had a pet but it passed away."
I approached the dog and extended my hand with a cookie I had in my pocket; surely that was the reason he jumped on me.
"You wanted this, right? Enjoy it."
The dog devoured the cookie and I patted his head.
The girl, like the others present, had blonde hair and blue eyes, and she stared at me.
"It seems Leomel likes you. Very well, you passed," she said, giving a thumbs up of approval.
"Layla, don't be rude," her mother said in a strong tone.
I calmed her down because it was a mistake to get upset over this.
"It's alright, ma'am. Nothing happened to me, but I find it curious that a dog is inside the house; generally dogs are outside."
"That's because Leomel isn't just any dog, he is a member of the family," exclaimed the girl, puffing out her small chest with pride.
"Marquis, this is Layla Von Campbell, our youngest daughter."
"Layla loves Leo very much, and it's true he is part of the family because he saved her from drowning when she was younger."
"Really?"
I remember there was a story like that, but I'm happy for the dog. I can see on his face how happy he is.
I would like to have a pet at home, but my mother hates all animal hair, even my dad's.
I could have one in mine, but Alisa and Ixion don't like furniture covered in hair.
Wait a second.
"Excuse me, Marquis, did you say 'your youngest daughter'? Does that mean you have more daughters?"
"Yes, three in fact."
"Three daughters!?"
(I thought only the poor people, like my family, had many children, but it seems the rich people can have several children too.)
"Hmph, so he's the famous Marquis."
"Tch, he's going to hear you."
I heard two voices coming from behind me, but the door was closed.
"Girls, stop wasting time and come in at once," said the lady of the house, and the door opened.
There stood two figures as if they were models.
Like the others present, they had long blonde hair, but each had eyes of different colors.
Although their faces were exactly the same, their gaze was the opposite.
"Girls, why did you take so long?"
By the way she spoke to them, it was evident they were her daughters. Their mother introduced each one to me.
"They are the last members of our family, the twins and the eldest sisters of everyone."
"Annerose Von Campbell, the second daughter. A pleasure to meet you, Marquis."
She had red eyes and a challenging attitude like Alisa; I could say she is a slightly older Alisa.
The girl next to her had a more relaxed gaze and blue eyes.
"Rosemary Von Campbell, the firstborn of the family. Like my twin sister, it is a pleasure to meet the hero of the kingdom."
"Pleased to meet you."
Both were beautiful, and I hid my gaze from them; the reason was simple: they wore dresses so low-cut that their large breasts stood out to such a level that I could put my face in them and use them as pillows.
"But there is someone else, who wishes to meet you more than we do."
The elder sister said that, and both stepped aside to reveal one last person, the last member of the family, I imagine.
Like everyone, her hair was blonde, but her eyes were a mix of blue and red.
Her dress was the prettiest and most elegant, reaffirming her beauty from head to toe, but she was very shy; every time she looked at me, her eyes wandered.
"A-a pleasure to meet you, Marquis Bradford-sama. I am the middle daughter, Alicephine Von Campbell; please call me Alicia."
"Alicia, huh. A pleasure to meet you."
I gave my greetings and pondered her name.
(It sounds a lot like Alisa's, but I feel I've heard it before from Alisa; I don't remember what the conversation was about.)
Once I was introduced to all the family members, the head of the house said it was time for dinner.
When I took a seat, it was next to the twins; the table was spacious, but they sat next to me, while Alicia sat across from me.
Lecia was behind me; I imagine she must be upset about this situation and because she won't eat.
Or so I thought, until Marquis Campbell asked her to sit down, and she, astonished, obeyed.
Dinner was brought and it was very delicious.
"Marquis Bradford, how do you find the food?" the lady of the house asked me.
"It is very delicious," I responded with total honesty to her question. "I didn't expect the atmosphere to be so… how to say it without sounding rude… so warm."
"In my family, a dinner like this is something unimaginable."
I was so focused on how comfortable I felt here that I didn't realize I shared private details.
"Really?"
"I don't want to offend you, but it's true that you were, until recently, the son of a country baron."
"It doesn't offend me at all. It's true I come from the countryside and a poor family; well, a family that left poverty."
I could notice that all of them, including the youngest daughter, were paying attention to what I said.
I felt, not uncomfortable, but strange, because I had never achieved this level of interest before in a conversation.
The head of the house now spoke to me after eating his steak.
"If you don't mind, Marquis, could you tell us how it was that someone who until recently was the third son of a country baron could become a national hero? I am sure everyone present wants to hear that story, since you are one of the most talked-about topics in the capital."
"One doesn't get to dine with the hero of the kingdom every day."
I couldn't tell if he was manipulating or praising me; they must be a merchant's negotiation tactics. It's undoubtedly terrifying, because I fell into his trap.
It had been a long time since I boasted, and even more so in front of such beautiful girls. I looked at Lecia seeking approval to tell them about Ixion, and with her gaze she indicated they are trustworthy.
"Well, we should start from the beginning; it's not an interesting story, but it all started when my father…"
◇
I told them about how my father tried to sell me to pay our debts, about when I almost died from eating poisoned food, my battle against Liam—twice—the pirates, the war against the Commonwealth and the Kingsfort's, and everything that happened in Aster.
Naturally, I omitted things related to the game theme, the reincarnated ones, and about Erselica. I couldn't deny my fiancées, at least up to Lucy and Sara; Ellen is a separate topic that isn't necessary. I feel I said too much.
But the expression on everyone's face indicated they not only paid too much attention, but were horrified.
"Is it really possible for someone so young to go through something like that?"
The first person to speak was the lady of the house.
"Well, it's not strange considering this world."
"Of course it is!" she said in an intense and strong tone of voice. "You have already resolved the problems with your family, I'm glad to hear it, but I cannot remain silent after hearing the rest."
"I would never have allowed the palace to treat any of my children like that. I am very surprised you didn't flee in that situation."
"Huh?"
(Wait, is she supporting me? Is she really supporting me?)
(I thought I was crazy for thinking it was abnormal for someone to flee in a situation where they were betrayed by their own country.)
"You should demand compensation from the palace for the damage to your name and image."
"W-well, the palace has already paid me for the damages; our relationship is more or less decent."
"I share my wife's opinion, Marquis."
"I went to war to protect my country and my family, but you did it for someone who tried to kill you. Honestly, if it were my son who was about to die and go to war leading a suicide attack, I would have taken my family and fled the kingdom."
"…"
Everything they said made me understand that I wasn't crazy for trying to flee; but I didn't do it because Alisa and Airi wouldn't flee. They, despite not having experienced what I did, are supporting me for having fled if I had wanted to. This is very surreal, and even more so because the queen of the kingdom is hearing everything while hiding her face with her hands.
"Also what happened in Aster. I understand the situation now, Marquis. And I apologize on behalf of everyone."
"You see, when we heard that you attacked two countries without reason, we thought you had gone mad, but now I understand what happened. You had your reasons, and it was a situation where war was the only option."
"I apologize for thinking poorly of you. You truly deserve the title of 'hero,' and it makes me very happy to have this talk with you."
"I feel we are becoming closer, and I hope that in the future there can be a connection between our families."
"L-likewise."
(They are flattering me so much it's embarrassing. I didn't understand anything about 'connection,' but it seems they want us to get along.)
"The dinner was delicious."
I said that because I finished my plate, like everyone else.
"Thank you very much for inviting me, but it's getting late."
"Marquis, would you mind staying to sleep here?"
"Huh? Really? I feel it would be an inconvenience."
"Of course not. The dinner we had served to bring us closer to you; without a doubt it was very gratifying for everyone, and it would make us happy if you joined us for breakfast."
"I feel it would be an abuse of your kindness."
"Not at all; you are our guest and deserve to be treated with all honors for being the hero of the country."
So much kindness and praise makes me mentally weak.
"In that case, I am in your care."
"Wonderful. Would you like to join our usual game?"
"Which game?"
"Every time we have dinner, to relax our stomachs, we go to the guest room to play something; that way we spend time as a family and relax after the meal."
"Sounds good to me."
"In that case—"
"Let us guide you."
Alicia's older sisters took me by the arms; it reminded me of when Alisa and Airi hugged me, but these girls were taller than them and with larger breasts that buried my arms.
We all went to a room where there were several board games.
We played one similar to a certain mustachioed man who sends you to jail, one with towers, and one where you guess the shape through a shadow.
It was weird, but I guess that's how a normal family dinner should be.
I feel dirty being with such wonderful people.
There was only one strange thing: Alicia wouldn't stop looking at me this whole time.
Rudel accepts and is given a double room so his maid can be nearby. The mother comments that she feels she has seen the maid before, and Lecia says she has an average face.
◇
Once the games were over, it was time to sleep. Naturally, I took a bath in a private bathroom. Lecia asked Mrs. Belinda to let her stay in an adjoining room, even though she wanted to send her to a separate room.
The lady agreed, and Lecia, who was covering her face so she wouldn't be recognized, was happy.
When I returned from the bath, she was tying up her black hair.
"I'm surprised the dye didn't come out."
"It's special dye; it works with magical power. As long as I inject my magical power into it, it will stay there. Look."
She stopped concentrating, and the tips of her hair turned yellow again.
"It's amazing, but why didn't you use it before on our date?"
She covered her face before responding.
"Because I liked the idea of playing secret identities. The dye would have ruined the facade."
"Sometimes you're very childish."
"Sorry."
"No, I like that about you."
I approached her and gave her a hug.
"Since we're going to sleep here, what do you think about a little fun together?"
"Goodness, you are very greedy."
Before we could kiss, someone knocked on the door, and Lecia ran straight to her room.
"Rudel-san, are you awake?"
That voice belonged to Alicia.
"Yes, I'm awake. Is something wrong?"
"No. It's just that… can I come in?"
"Sure."
I covered my parts, which were in high spirits.
The door opened; Alicia, who was wearing a long nightgown and holding a pillow, was standing at my door.
She entered and closed it.
"Can I sit next to you?"
"Of course."
I didn't understand what she was looking for; it didn't seem hostile, but something stranger.
When she sat next to me, our legs touched.
"I… want to tell you something. But right now I feel shy; it has never happened to me before."
"I understand; I also don't feel comfortable with strangers. But I liked your family, and that discomfort went away. I really liked being here."
Thanks to what I said, she seemed comfortable.
"I'm glad you liked having dinner with my family. And that's what I came to talk to you about."
"The reason we invited you to dinner… was because of me."
"Really?"
I was surprised to learn that Alicia was responsible for my coming.
"Yes. If what they were looking for was a partner or something like that, I'm sure a family dinner wasn't necessary."
"We're not looking to be partners or anything like that. In fact, my dad never had that intention, because he only knew you by name. I was the one who asked him to invite you, because…"
She fell silent; I watched as she puffed out her chest to take a deep breath, and then said:
"I wanted to meet you. That's why we invited you to dinner, because it was the only way I could meet you while being outside the academy."
"Really?"
"I'm sorry, but I don't know you at the academy."
"It's normal you don't know me. We had never spoken before. But we did meet once."
"We met for the first time when—"
She proceeded to tell me a bunch of things, but the only important thing was what she said at the end:
"Rudel-san, if it doesn't bother you… I would like you to please take me as your concubine."
I can only say one thing:
(Ixiiiooon! Now I'm a womanizer! You doubted me, but look how I can conquer women without making a fool of myself like you say! In your face, you stinky unpleasant sphere!)

Did you like Alicia's family? It was short; they left me just like Rudel: they're super friendly and wonderful, I feel dirty joining them.
There was a nod here to my other Otome novel; I hope you notice it.
