Chapter 6: War Shadow
As the golden-haired girl walked away, her footsteps echoing into the distance, Drake finally turned his attention to the barrage of notifications ringing in his mind.

Drake stared at the blinking prompt, stunned. "I barely scratched that thing and still got 54,000 EXP? I'll take it!" he muttered with a grin. "System, initiate War Shadow Evolution."
Acknowledged. Beginning evolution.
Dark shadows enveloped his body, wrapping around him like liquid smoke. His kobold form began to shift and stretch. His limbs lengthened, muscles tightened, and his skin turned pitch black. Razor-sharp claws extended from his now humanoid hands. When the shadows finally faded, Drake stood taller—sleeker and far more menacing.
Opening his eyes, now narrow slits of burning red, Drake grinned. Power surged through every fiber of his new form.

"This… feels amazing," Drake whispered as he flexed his claws. "I'm faster, stronger—and damn, that Phase Shift is broken. Mental drain aside, I love this."
He darted through the tunnels, eager to test his new strength. Soon, he spotted a pack of four kobolds. They barely had time to react before Drake activated Phase Shift and sprinted through them, his claws carving their bodies into dust. He grabbed one by the throat and crushed it effortlessly. The last one swung at him, but its attack passed right through his phased form. Drake retaliated with a devastating Lunge, ending it in one strike.
"I feel almost… human again," he murmured. "But Phase Shift drains me quick. Gotta pace myself."
He wandered deeper into the dungeon, killing everything in his path—goblins, kobolds, it didn't matter. One ambush after another, until two familiar DINGs echoed in his mind.

Grinning, Drake turned a corner and spotted a familiar structure: stairs leading deeper underground.
Before he could reach them, the ceiling above cracked open with a thunderous rumble. He leapt back just in time to avoid a massive figure that crashed down in front of him.
A notification appeared:
[KOBOLD VARIANT: FENRIR – LVL 16]
The creature stood tall, its bluish fur bristling with fury. It bared sharp teeth and growled with burning orange eyes before lunging straight at Drake.
Drake's instincts kicked in—he dodged and slashed at the Fenrir's shoulder, severing one of its arms. The beast howled in agony, and energy began to swirl around its remaining claw. With a roar, it unleashed a wave of force that shredded the wall behind Drake as he ducked just in time.
"Shit!" Drake hissed. "That could've cut me in half!"
He retaliated by phasing through the Fenrir, emerging behind it like a phantom. Using a whirlwind of Lunge and Sprint, he twisted mid-air, spinning like a tornado, and tore the creature to shreds. When the dust settled, Drake was panting—Phase Shift had drained him—but victorious.

Drake's eyes widened. "Are you kidding me? This world just keeps getting better!"
But before he could celebrate, he heard laughter—followed by a girl's cry.
Curious and cautious, Drake followed the noise until he found the source. Around the corner, three humans were beating a small girl.
"You useless supporter!" one snarled, kicking her into the wall. "Give us back our money!"
Watching the scene, Drake's vision began to blur—not from confusion, but from rage. The screams echoed in his mind, overlapping with old memories he desperately tried to forget.
He snapped.
In a flash, Drake used Sprint and Lunge. He materialized beside the first man and beheaded him without a second thought.
"W-What the fu—" were the man's last words.
The other two turned in shock. "A War Shadow?! Roy, chant something, now!" one yelled while drawing his blade.
Drake targeted the caster. As the other man's sword phased through him, Drake bisected the spellcaster, his blood soaking the stones. He then lunged at the last one, whose sword shattered under the weight of Drake's claws.
Moments later, only dust remained.
Drake turned to the trembling girl, her bruised body pressed against the wall. She stared at him, wide-eyed and silent.
Ignoring her, Drake looted the dead adventurers, stuffing gold and valuables into a sack. Then, he dropped the bag beside the girl.
He approached the wall and scratched a word into the stone with his claw: RUN
The girl watched, stunned. Drake pointed at her, then turned and walked away.
But just before he vanished from sight, he heard her soft voice.
"Thank you… weird monster. I'm… I'm Liliruca Arde. I'll never forget you."
Drake paused only for a second, then kept walking.
Two more DINGs echoed in his head.
