He meticulously, almost ritualistically, followed the guidebook he himself had authored a long time ago on how to hunt Werewolves. A perfect, cold execution guide that was designed to maximize his winning chance against any Werewolf.
This would be his final hunt, so it's only right for him to do everything perfectly without a mistake.
Unfortunately for him, perfect doesn't guarantee success.
Once again, another rule was crossed out.
