Chapter 36 - Some Getting Used To (L)

"Here it is." Dream stated as he gestured to a door along the corridor that was higher up in the Sanctuary than Lukas was ever used to. "W-Woah... uh... can you help out here?" Lukas requested as he had completely ignored Dream to look down upon the rest of the people below only to find himself frozen from the height that he was gazing from. "Oh, sure." Dream replied as he quickly grabbed Lukas and pulled him away from the window. "Thanks... I thought I was gonna be there forever." Lukas admitted as he was able to breathe thanks to his fear disappearing. "I didn't know that you had acrophobia, that'll be very useful to know for later especially considering the fact that my brother loves to use information like that to his advantage." Dream explained as Lukas turned to the entrance of his new room that was gifted to him since he joined the Protectors. "So, what'll I be doing?" Lukas asked as he slowly reached out and touched the cold metal handle of the door before gently pushing it open. "I'm not entirely sure, I do think your first official task will be an easy one though so you shouldn't worry about it too much." Dream attempted to reinforce Lukas' confidence but he was unsure as to how effective his words were. As Lukas peered inside of his new residency, he found that it looked practically identical to his previous one which he thought to be quite disappointing. "I guess I'll be seeing you later then." Lukas spoke with a sigh as he entered his room and closed the door behind him before Dream even had a chance to respond.

"Bethany, are you back yet?" Lukas inquired as he sat down on the surprisingly soft bed that seemed to be the only thing that had changed in the room. A few moments later, Lukas concluded that his friend had not returned from whatever she was doing due to there being no response on her part. "Well, now what do I do?" He asked himself as he shook his head and sighed. Lukas held out his hand as his soul appeared; the red, spherical object floating over his palm with a small fragment of a purple soul contained within. As he stared on at the piece of his former friend's soul, Lukas began to feel like he didn't know who it belonged to... or rather, he had an idea as to who it belonged to but he wasn't so sure of his own assumption anymore. He didn't even know why he felt that way, he just did.

Just as Lukas was about to call out to Bethany again, he heard a voice that answered his request before he even spoke it aloud... but it wasn't the voice that he wanted to hear. "Isn't it so boring just sitting around doing nothing? Don't you just want to go out there and wreak havoc? If you do that, at least people will remember you because as it stands right now, nobody will even remember your name or your face when you're gone." That same distorted voice suggested in such a convincing tone to the point where Lukas struggled to obey its command immediately. "You... you're that voice that convinced me to attack Eanaro! What are you doing in my head?" Lukas asked as he quickly stood up from the shock of hearing the voice again. "I'm here because it's in your nature to kill and spread doubt and discord to every person that you come across... not that you'll remember it but that's the other reason why I'm here; to remind you of your purpose." The voice explained although Lukas could barely understand it at some points. "I don't know who you are but I've already had enough of you. Get out of my head!" Lukas demanded as he wanted to be free of the voice's rambling. "I knew you'd say that, you always did want to get rid of your regrets but unfortunately for you, it will never be as easy as you want it to be." The voice explained which only made Lukas' negative emotions grow.

"Who the hell are you!?" Lukas asked as he held his head. The voice began laughing maniacally before responding to Lukas. "If I told you that, then it would ruin the surprise... and I don't like spoilers." It stated before Lukas slowly felt the chilling presence fading away. Lukas remained silent as he processed all of what just happened. "Why... Why can I never get a straight answer?" Lukas quietly spoke to himself as he felt himself to be on the verge of tears. Being so clueless when, just a month ago, he had known everything he needed to about his home. Needless to say, The Multiverse was a confusing place especially to a boy as young as Lukas was. How did Core expect a sixteen year old boy to become a defender of such a vast and convoluted place? "Bethany... please come back." Lukas requested into the currently empty space. There was no response; not a word spoken, not a sound made and not a comforting action in sight... there was nothing. With nothing left to do, Lukas sighed, climbed into bed and prayed to whatever God's that existed that he wouldn't have a nightmare much like the last few times he fell asleep. Lukas knew that his situation was going to take some getting used to.

"How ironic, now you're living as I once did."
