"Well, it was not really what I expected," I answered him.
"What do you mean by that, Aunt?" he asked. I honestly didn't know how to answer his question, but I had to say something or else he would be upset.
"I don't know how to answer your question," I replied honestly. I said something, didn't I?
"Just rate the movie out of 10," Alexa suggested.
"Yeah, that would be nice," Kyle agreed.
"I would give it maybe an eight." Alexa and Kyle gave me a look that confused me, while Edward looked sad. Wait, what? I was just being honest. Should I have given it a ten?
I decided to ask, "What's wrong with my answer? Should I have rated it higher?" I was honestly confused—I mean, I just gave an honest answer.
"Yes, it should have been higher. Frozen deserves a lot more." Edward looked like he was on the verge of tears. Talk about being dramatic, I was being generous when I gave the movie an eight, but I feel bad now.
"I didn't mean it that way, it was—I mean, Frozen was good. Don't feel sad, okay?" Seeing him sad made me sad, and knowing I was the cause made me feel worse.
Alexa, Edward, and Kyle burst out laughing, I was confused, what was funny?
"Why are you all laughing?" This made them laugh more, which confused me further.
"We got you so good!" Alexa said between laughs.
Wait, what? "Were you all pranking me?" I demanded, needing answers.
"I'm so sorry, Aunt, but Dad suggested it while we were watching the movie. I didn't want to do it at first, but he promised to buy me a new video game, and I couldn't resist the offer. Besides, I needed a new video game," Edward confessed.
My mouth went agape at the information I'd just heard. "Alexa, you were in on this too?"
Alexa in question just gave me a cheesy smile.
"And you suggested this, Kyle?" I asked for clarification.
"Well, isn't that obvious?" he shrugged.
"You know what? I promise to have my revenge on you all, and since you decided to play this stupid prank on me, I am leaving." Standing up, I headed to the door. I was obviously joking but they needed to have a taste of their own medicine
"Goodbye." I said dramatically, knowing very well I wasn't going anywhere
As I was about to open the door, a hand stopped it from opening. I looked to see whose hand it was, and to my surprise, it was Kyle. I thought Alexa would be the one to stop me.
"I'm sorry, okay? I—I mean we just wanted to have a little fun," he apologized.
"And what made you think I would accept your apology?" I decided to tease him a little bit. I had to suppress my urge to laugh.
"I'm sorry, okay? I promise to make it up to you." If I weren't trying to get back at him, I would have laughed right in his face. The expression Kyle wore was hilarious—he looked genuinely sad, and his resemblance to Edward was strikingly obvious.
"And how will you do that?" I asked.
As he was about to speak, he was interrupted by Edward. "Aunt, please don't go. Dad would do anything." Awwwn he's such a sweetheart.
I was about to respond when Alexa interrupted, "Stacy, at least stay for the kid." I wasn't planning on going to begin with drama queen.
"Okay, okay, fine. I will stay, just don't pull that kind of prank on me again." I finally gave in to them, which made them all smile. And I smiled in satisfaction knowing I got back at them.
"So, what do we do now?" Alexa asked.
"Let's watch another movie," I suggested.
Alexa huffed. "That's what we've been doing all day. What time did you say you were going again?" she asked.
"I think nine. Yes, nine is when I'm going," I answered. I know I said seven earlier but I don't want to leave anymore, it's fun spending time with them.
And it seemed they also forgot the time I had stated earlier or maybe they didn't want to remind me, either way I didn't mind . At the time it was 6:55pm, I didn't want to go home in the next five minutes.
"It's in two hours," Kyle stated. "That means you still have a little time." A little time? Two hours hardly seemed little to me.
And I had no idea what we were going to do, especially since Alexa said no movie watching.
"Well, we actually have nothing to do," I stated the obvious fact.
"We could just play chess," Edward suggested.
"But we are four," I pointed out. How would the four of us play chess, isn't it a game for two?.
"We actually have a lot of chess sets because of this little rascal here, he wouldn't stop asking us to buy them for him despite having a lot at home," Alexa rolled her eyes.
Even I find it ridiculous that he had a lot of chess sets but I find it more ridiculous that the two grown adults agreed to buy it for him.
"Don't call me that! I just love chess," he defended. "And besides, Dad didn't complain," he continued. Oh, I think Edward is not the only chess obsessed person here.
"Edward, just go bring the chess set, will you?" Kyle seemed tired. I wondered why.
Edward went in immediately and brought back the chess sets.
"Who are we playing with?" I asked.
"Obviously, you are playing with me," Alexa declared, her excitement evident Kyle and Edward frowned simultaneously, their resemblance uncanny.Wow, they really did look alike, but the frowns on their faces almost made me laugh.
"Who said you could pick?" Kyle snapped sharply. Woah, he needs to chill, he wasn't truly angry but he was acting like a brat.
"I want to play with Aunt!" Edward yelled as well. They are truly are father and son.
"But I chose her first," Alexa countered.
This was most definitely not going well, and I needed to stop it before the whole matter would escalate.
"Don't I have the right to pick who I want to play with?" My question finally got their attention and stopped them from glaring at each other. Were they always like this? Bickering like little kids, yes, I know there is a kid there but you get my point.
"Who do you want to play with?" Kyle asked. He looked at me expectantly
Okay, this was hard. I didn't know who to pick.
"Can't we all play together? Two on a team?" I suggested, hoping they would agree.
"Not a bad idea. We are on the same team," Alexa said. She really wasn't making this easy, but by the looks on the other two faces, I guessed they were okay with it.
"I'm black," Edward and I said at the same time.
Okay, I didn't know we would say it at the same time.
"Let's just play it how we want. Alexa and I will play," Kyle reasoned, which made Alexa pout but eventually nod.
Wow, I never realized I was so bad at chess—Edward and I kept losing every round, mostly because of me. I'm sure he regretted picking me, but when I glanced at him, he actually seemed to be enjoying himself.
I mean, I wasn't an experienced chess player, I only played it in school with Ethan, but I didn't know I was this bad. I didn't even catch a pawn! Edward caught a queen two rooks and two bishops, but that wasn't enough since we lost.
"I never knew you were this bad at playing chess," Alexa laughed. I'm sure she was grateful for not being my partner
"I didn't know myself," I muttered, still finding it hard to believe I was bad at chess. It's not my fault I can't play chess, I think the last time I played chess was ten or eleven years ago.
Unconsciously, I glanced at the clock—it was exactly nine p.m., the time I was supposed to leave. I was really having fun, but I had already told them I'd be gone by nine.
"Uh, guys, it's nine already, and I've got to, you know, head out," I told them reluctantly, I didn't want to leave yet.
"Already?" Alexa asked.
"Unfortunately, yes," I nodded at her. Hoping one of them would stop me.
"Have a good night, Aunt, and please visit us often." Edward is so sweet.Though he didn't say anything to stop me, his expression clearly showed he wished I wouldn't leave. I found that thoughtful, but honestly, I didn't want to go.
I gave him a smile, "Good night Edward, make sure to dream of me" now that I think about it, shouldn't he be in bed?
I stood up and made my way to the entrance.
"Wait," I heard Kyle say. Before I could turn to him, he added, "Let me walk you to the bus station."
That was so thoughtful of him, I really appreciated that, a smile spread across my face, I nodded at his kind gesture. I waved goodbye to both Alexa and Edward before heading out, not missing when Alexa mouthing, "Text me."
