Chapter 10 - THE MARKSMAN

At an unknown location, Floyd Lawton is cleaning his sniper rifle and gets a call on his burner phone.

"Lawton, my man. Is the job done yet? I bought this new bottle of champagne, don't wanna crack it open unless I have something to celebrate."

"Not yet." Lawton answers.

"Not yet? What the hell is taking you so long? I paid you a lot of money to get the job done quickly so I can get back to business."

"Watch it, mask. Just because you paid me, doesn't mean you dictate how I work. You'll get your dead bird when the time is right."

Black mask grits his teeth, then smiles.

"Fine. As long as you get the job done, I really don't care. Just get it done."

Mask hangs up, and Lawton continues to clean his sniper.

Meanwhile at the precinct, Dick tells Aaron everything with Barbara.

"Wow, that's...a lot." Aaron says.

"Yep."

"You wanna talk about it?"

"Not particularly, no."

At that moment police chief Ellen Yin comes in with a man wearing a suit.

"Listen up, everyone. This is district attorney, Mateo Flores. He'll be working with us to capture Nightwing."

Flores then walks up with an arrogant smile.

"Our number one priority is catching this vigilante, everything else comes second. He's been running amok in Bludhaven long enough."

Aaron then leans over to Dick.

"Looks like you have more problems than just Lawton."

"Doesn't matter what people think I am. I came here to help people and the city, that's what I plan to do."

Aaron smirks as they both continue to work until the day is over.

That night, Dick is suiting up to go after Deadshot. As he puts on his costume, he cringes in pain, clutching his shoulder.

"You sure you're ready to go out again?" Aaron asks.

"Not really. But what can I say, I'm an impatient guy."

When he picks up his mask, he sees the device that Barbara gave him just in case he was ever in trouble. He stares at it for a moment, let's out a sigh and begrudgingly grabs the device.

"What's that?" Aaron asks.

"Hopefully something I won't need." Dick replies with a smirk. He then puts on his mask and leaves.

A few minutes later, Lawton sits in a run down hotel room, drinking a beer. Meanwhile, Nightwing slowly approaches the door, not making a sound. After a moment of waiting, he then kicks open the door and throws wingdings at Lawton. Lawton quickly dives behind the bed and opens fire with the gun on his wrist. Dick hides behind cover as the bullets fly. Deadshot then puts on his mask and jumps out of the window. Dick quickly chases after him.

As that's happening, someone in the next room calls Nine-one-one.

Deadshot crashes through the door of an abandoned building. He quickly gets to his feet and aims his guns at the doorway, waiting for Nightwing. Dick surprises him by jumping through a window behind him. Lawton turns around and opens fire, but Dick rolls out of the way and behind cover. Deadshot slowly approaches where Dick is hiding. He turns the corner, but sees no one there.

The gunman walks through the building, watching out for Nightwing. Dick then jumps out of the shadows and kicks him in the back and to the ground. Lawton aims his gun from the ground, but the young vigilante kicks his hand away and knees him in the face. Dick then grabs him and pins him against the wall, his forearm right on his throat.

"Where's Black Mask?!"

Lawton doesn't answer as he struggles to breathe. He then hits Dick in his injured shoulder over and over again. Dick grits his teeth and tries to push through the pain, but his grip slowly loosens. Deadshot then kicks Dick off of him, but as he re aims, Nightwing is gone. Lawton carefully walks through the room again, searching for his target.

"So the original boy wonder finally left the nest and became his own man." Lawton says.

"The old costume didn't fit me anymore, so." Dick jokingly says.

Lawton continues to slowly walk through the room, searching for Nightwing.

"It must pissed you off though. I mean, the dark knight replacing you with a new kid like that. Or maybe, it's that, no matter what you do, you will never measure up to the big bad bat."

Dick realizes that Lawton is trying to make him come out of hiding by antagonizing him.

"It must piss you off that you're wearing a volleyball on your head and actually expect people to be intimidated by you."

Deadshot smirks, then opens fire in the darkness. When Dick is about to sneak up on him, Ellen Yin barges in with her gun.

"Freeze!" She demands.

"Oh no." Dick says under his breath.

Lawton puts his hands up, acting like he's surrendering. He then aims his guns at her and opens fire. Dick quickly grabs her, avoids the bullets and ducks behind cover. Yin looks at Nightwing in shock, but regains her composer.

"You're under arrest." She tells him.

Dick looks at her for a moment.

"Hold that thought."

Soon, the bullets stop and Dick pulls out a wingding. He then cartwheels with no hands, and throws the wingding into the barrel of the gun. When Deadshot pulls the trigger, the gun on his wrist blows up and launches him into the wall, knocking him out. Dick then throws two wingdings into his shirt, pinning him against the wall.

"He should be out for awhile." Dick says.

He then turns around and sees Yin aiming a gun at him.

"I really need to stop getting myself into situations like these."
