AS they walked past the greenhouses, Astrid explained what they were seeing. In one greenhouse, vegetables grew in neat, straight rows. Their leaves were a deep green and looked very healthy. In another, herbs like basil and rosemary filled the air with a fresh, strong smell.
Outside, leafy plants moved softly in the light wind. Astrid said that everything was planted by hand. Each row was carefully spaced so the plants had room to grow.
The group walked past groups of fruit trees. The branches were heavy with ripe fruit. Vines of beans and peas climbed up wooden poles. Straw covered the ground around the plants. This helped keep the soil moist and stopped weeds from growing.
The people were working on the farm moved slowly down the rows, pruning, watering, and lightly turning the soil with small tools. When they saw Astrid and Reas, they waved excitedly. Some gathered around them, clearly happy to see the twins, especially Astrid.
