Chapter 20 - Chapter Twenty: Leanunya

Leanunya managed to get some sleep during the night after a healer came and treated her broken wing and ribs. The healer had even given her some herbs to kill the pain which was a great relief and allowed her to get some sleep. She wouldn't have been able to get much sleep otherwise and with the fact she hadn't slept since waking in this prison cell she needed the sleep.

She woke at dawn and sat up, yawning a bit before wincing even then, she was glad to get some decent rest before this unwanted trip. Although it gave her a higher chance to escape it was sudden and she was cautious. She knew Wolferan had to have some kind of trick to keep her under wraps as his prisoner. She just couldn't figure out what it was.

She stretched as much as she dared without causing herself much pain and sat waiting for this trip to Rynion. She couldn't understand why he felt the need to go there and confirm her words. With his skills and resources he could look into it fast enough without risking her escape. She didn't mind it though as it gave her ample ways to escape.

Leanunya looked to the cell door as it was opened. Wolferan held a plate of food and entered handing her the plate. She took it and looked at the eggs and hash browns on it. She then looked at him as he spoke.

"After you eat we'll head out" she nodded as he continued. "You do know of magic?" She looks at him, "yes I do" He nodded, "good that will make it simpler. I will be casting a spell that will link us. You'll only be able to go five yards from me. This will prevent you from escaping"

Leanunya scowled but nodded. She knew of magic but knew little of it as it was rare to see. Most of the time no one even thought it really existed although she had found several references to it. She didn't know what magic could or couldn't do, only that it was a dying art. She didn't know how one used magic or if anyone could use magic.

Thinking of this made her curious even as she started to eat her breakfast. If she could get Wolferan to tell her more about magic she would have more knowledge of it to use. Of course it could just be completely useless to herself as she might not be able to use magic or only certain bloodlines could use it. It had now piqued her curiosity. After she finished the food on her plate she looked at Wolferan.

"How does one use magic?" Wolferan blinked, seemingly surprised at her question before he answered. "One uses their inner power or more commonly known as mana" Leanunya looks at him curiously, "Mana?" Wolferan nodded, "yes mana, it's an energy found in everything and before you ask; no not everyone can use this mana. One has to have a gift to sense it and use it"

Leanunya blinked, "so anyone could use it if they had a gift for it? How does one sense mana?" Wolferan sighed, "if you can't sense mana to begin with then you have no gift for it. Now, let's just go after I cast this spell"

Before she could ask anymore Wolferan had closed his eyes and stretched out a hand towards her. She fell silent as she watched and soon she could see a very faint thread like glow start to stretch from his hand towards herself. She scooted back some to avoid it but to no avail as it seemed to sink into her chest. It caused no pain nor did she even feel anything but she could still see it all the same and frowned. She tried to touch it but her hand passed right through it. She couldn't understand what it was.

She looked at Wolferan who had relaxed and said, "it's done."

He then walked over and unlocked her from the chains. Leanunya stood and rubbed her wrists looking at him. She flicked her tail even as he led the way out of the cell and out of the dungeon. She then asked.

"So, is this glowing thread like thingy mana? Or magic?"

Leanunya saw Wolferan stop dead in his tracks and turned to her. The look on his face was one of shock which made her snort in humor but immediately regretted it from the pain it caused her.

"You can see it?" She nodded, "yes. So, what is it?" She saw Wolferan visibly pause, "it is magic. Magic is just mana being directed by the user's will. Can you really see it?"

Leanunya nodded, "yes. What's wrong with that?" She watched Wolferan take a deep breath before answering. "It is rare for one to sense mana let alone see it. You being able to see it is… you have a knack for magic. But I will not teach you."

Leanunya blinked then frowned speaking, "I can only see the glowing thread, I can't see mana"

Wolferan sighed before he continued to walk speaking, "magic is using mana. So not being able to see mana in its natural state is normal but seeing it in its directed form such as the thread is extremely rare. Most magic users will never be able to see the mana like that. They would only be able to see it if they directed it into a solid form such as a sword. Otherwise seeing mana is near impossible."

Leanunya frowned before asking, "can you see it like me?"

Wolferan nodded even as he left the house going outside with her following. Leanunya nodded her eyes filled with curiosity about magic now. She knew she had to control herself though as now wasn't the time to be asking about magic and mana. She needed to be focused on escaping first then she could look into magic. Although, she probably wouldn't find anyone or anything with more knowledge about magic then a magic user like Wolferan.

But there was a large issue with that. How was she going to get him to talk? He already didn't trust her and thought of her as a criminal. Although she really was a criminal she had never killed innocent people if she could help it. She wouldn't get anything from Wolferan anymore about magic so she was on her own for now to figure it out.

Of course if she could get more from Wolferan it would help. If she could win him over and have him teach her or more would be even better but she had no hopes of winning his trust. She doubted she could get much else out of him. He had only given vague explanations about mana and magic. But these vague explanations really made her curious.

But there was also another issue. She didn't know if she could trust him. She thought of him as a bad person but so far he hadn't done anything she expected him to do since arriving. And he was no longer giving her the feeling that he was so dangerous. She didn't know what to think of him anymore.
