Chapter 1 - First drink, first mistake

For as long as I can remember, I've always tried to be what my parents expected, the good daughter. Whether it was religion, school, career, appearance, even my interests, I did everything I could to please them, hoping one day they'd acknowledge me. But now, I've realized that dream will never come true.

The worst part is, I don't know what to do if I'm not living for them. If I'm not walking the path they carved out for me, then what path is mine?

I've spent my whole life following their words like gospel. I don't even know how to carve out my own without feeling like I'm betraying something or someone.

Still, I intend to try.

Starting now, I'm going to live life on my own terms. That's why I'm taking my best friends, Carol and Shelly, to a club tonight. I'm going to drink whatever I want, dance with whoever I want, and just, finally live MY life.

The drinks start flowing, and before I know it, I'm drunk. Makes sense, really, I've never had alcohol before. My parents were always strictly against it.

"I'm gonna go get us more drinks so we can catch up with you!" Carol calls over the music, grinning, then darts off toward the bar.

My eyes follow her through the crowd, but something on the upper level catches my attention. Four men are standing on the second floor, watching us. One of them breaks away from the group and starts coming down the stairs.

He's heading in Carol's direction.

Alarm bells go off in my head. I quickly stand up, weaving through the crowd to get to her.

"Where are you going?" Shelly shouts behind me.

"I think Carol's in trouble; I'm going to get her!"

The music is pounding in my ears as I push through the dancers. Thankfully, I'm closer than the man and reach Carol first. I glance back just in time to see all four men's gaze locked onto the two of us.

"Hey, what are you doing over here? I said I'd get this round," Carol says, surprised.

"Sorry," I reply, catching my breath. "I saw some shady-looking guys watching us, and one of them was heading right for you."

"What guys? Where?!" Her voice rises in panic.

"That guy over th—" I turn to point him out, but he's gone. When I look up at the second floor, the others are gone too.

"Not funny," Carol says irritably.

"I swear, they were just there a second ago."

"Whatever. You're probably just drunk. This is your first time drinking. Maybe we should stop for the night and head out," Carol says, her voice tinged with concern.

"Yeah… you're probably right. Let's go grab Shelly and get out of here."

We head back to our table, but Shelly's not there. Oddly, all our stuff still is.

"Where'd she go? Did she follow you?" Carol asks.

"No. Or, I don't think so. I was so focused on getting to you and watching those guys, I didn't notice where she went."

"Maybe she's just in the bathroom. Let's grab our things and check."

"Okay."

We make our way to the restroom, but after searching every stall, there's no sign of her.

"If she's not here… then where is she?" Carol asks, clearly nervous now.

"I don't know," I whisper, a chill crawling up my spine.
