Relief, pure and overwhelming, washed over them. The door opened, and one of the nurses stepped out, cradling a small, tightly bundled figure in her arms. She smiled brightly upon seeing Lie Fan and bowed deeply. "Congratulations, my lord!" she announced, her voice ringing clear. "It is a healthy boy! Both Lady Lu Lingqi and the child are safe."
Lie Fan's heart seized and then soared.
He stepped forward, hands trembling slightly, and the nurse gently placed the newborn into his arms. The baby was tiny, warm, and alive, his face scrunched up in an adorable grimace as he continued to cry indignantly at the injustice of the world.
Lie Fan gazed down at his son feeling something powerful and wordless settle deep into his soul.
He barely noticed as Ying Yue, Diao Chan, and Cai Wenji gathered around him, peering over his shoulders with radiant faces. Their soft laughter and gentle coos mingled with the baby's cries.
Carefully, Lie Fan carried the newborn into the medical room.
Inside, Lu Lingqi lay propped up against a mountain of pillows, her face pale and glistening with sweat, but her eyes... oh, her eyes. They were shining brighter than any jewel, full of exhaustion and triumph and boundless love.
When she saw him, she smiled weakly, her arms reaching out.
Lie Fan smiled back, a gentle, tender smile reserved only for moments like these. He approached and knelt by her side, pressing a reverent kiss to her forehead.
"Thank you," he whispered, voice thick with emotion. "Thank you for your hard work, Qi'er."
She chuckled softly, tears springing to her eyes. "It was nothing," she said, though they both knew it was everything.
Lie Fan carefully handed the baby to her, watching as Lu Lingqi cradled their son with a mother's instinctual tenderness. The infant's cries immediately softened into whimpers, then faded into tiny, hiccupping breaths.
Ying Yue, Diao Chan, and Cai Wenji gathered around the bedside, their expressions soft with awe as they gazed upon the newest member of their family.
"What shall we name him?" Ying Yue asked quietly.
Lie Fan smiled, brushing a finger lightly against his son's tiny cheek.
"I have thought of a name," he said.
They all looked at him expectantly.
"Just like I promised to Qi'er, if it was a male, he would inherit the Lu surname, so his name would be Lu Liang," Lie Fan said, his voice full of meaning. "Liang, meaning bright and good."
"A bright light for our family's future and safety," Diao Chan murmured, her eyes moist.
"Lu Liang," Cai Wenji repeated, smiling gently. "It is a good name. Auspicious."
Lu Lingqi, holding their son close, nodded in agreement, her own heart swelling with love. "Lu Liang," she whispered to the sleeping infant. "Our precious light. Thank you husband for holding on to your promise."
The baby stirred slightly, as if in approval.
For a long, blessed while, the family remained gathered there, basking in the warmth of the moment. Outside, the sun dipped low, casting a golden glow through the windows, painting everything in a halo of light.
Eventually, the midwives and nurses bustled back in, carefully tending to Lu Lingqi and the newborn. Lie Fan reluctantly let the nurses take Lu Liang to clean and swaddle properly, while Cai Wenji and Ying Yue helped Lu Lingqi refresh herself.
Diao Chan remained beside Lie Fan, her hand slipping into his.
"You look like you've conquered the world, husband," she teased softly.
He laughed under his breath, squeezing her hand.
"Not yet," he said. "But today... today I have conquered my own heart."
Diao Chan leaned against him, her smile luminous.
As the evening wore on, a modest feast was prepared in the residence, not a grand celebration, for Lu Lingqi needed her rest, but enough to honor the birth of a son to the Lie and Lu Clan
Close family, trusted retainers, and a few high ranking officers were invited quietly. Jia Xu, Chen Qun, Lu Su, Zhuge Liang, Xu Shu, Pang Tong, Sima Yi, Chen Gong, and Xun You all arrived with warm congratulations.
Jia Xu, that sly old fox, even presented a small jade rattle, claiming dryly, "Every future strategist must begin training early."
Everyone laughed, the tension of the past months momentarily forgotten.
Even as they celebrated, Lie Fan's mind remained sharp. He pulled Jia Xu aside during the evening.
"How fares Shi Gan's approach, Wenhe?" he asked quietly.
Jia Xu, sipping from a cup of fine tea, nodded approvingly. "All is proceeding smoothly, my lord. The guards are doubled, and the ceremonial preparations are ready. Shi Gan's arrival will coincide perfectly with the announcement of your son's birth, an auspicious omen to bind loyalty tighter."
Lie Fan smiled, feeling the gears of destiny click once more into place.
"Good," he said. "Tomorrow, I will draft the decree. Let the people know that the Heavens have blessed Xiapi and that peace and prosperity will flourish under our rule."
Jia Xu bowed low.
"As you command, my lord."
Later that night, when the feast had ended and the guests had departed, Lie Fan returned to Lu Lingqi's bedside.
She was half asleep, Lu Liang nestled against her chest. Ying Yue, Diao Chan, and Cai Wenji dozed nearby, curled up in chairs and sofas, their hair spilling like dark rivers over the cushions.
Lie Fan stood in the doorway for a long time, drinking in the sight.
He moved quietly to Lingqi's side and sat down, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face.
"I promise you," he whispered, his voice full of iron and devotion. "I will build a world where you and our children will never have to know fear. I will forge a peace that will last for generations."
The infant stirred, his tiny hand clutching at his mother's robe.
Lie Fan smiled.
Outside, the night stretched wide and silent, the stars blinking like tiny beacons.
Two days passed by, and the morning sun cast long rays through the open windows of the Governor Castle in Xiapi. The air inside the grand hall was cool and filled with quiet murmurs of anticipation.
Lie Fan stood proudly at the head of the chamber, clad in a robe of dark blue embroidered with golden dragons, a subtle crown of authority resting on his brow. He looked every bit the ruler he had become, not only in power, but in presence.
To his left were seated the core minds of his court Jia Xu, Chen Qun, Lu Su, Liu Ye, Zhuge Liang, Xu Shu, Pang Tong, Sima Yi, Chen Gong, and Xun You.
To his right stood a more martial presence, his trusted generals and warriors Zhao Yun, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Ji Ling, and Xu Rong.
Today was a day of consequence. Shi Gan and Shi Song, were arriving with their delegation to pledge allegiance.
But more than that, the announcement of Lu Liang's birth had gone public just yesterday, spreading like wildfire through the streets and alleys of Xiapi. People had taken it as a sign from Heaven itself, the perfect omen to bless the future of their lord.
Children had played in the streets singing about the "Little Bright Star" born under a shining sun. Elders toasted quietly to peace and prosperity. Merchants whispered their congratulations as they did business. The city had bloomed with an unspoken joy and a newfound confidence.
That news had reached Shi Gan and Shi Song even before they neared the city gates. And as their cavalcade approached the Governor Castle, lined by guards in ceremonial armor, banners fluttering, they looked at each other and nodded.
"Perhaps," Shi Gan murmured, "this is truly the will of Heaven."
Shi Song, the younger and more pragmatic of the two, replied, "If Heaven favors a man, it's because he knows how to act when the time is right. His youngest son's birth is not just a blessing, it's a message."
When the two brothers entered the Governor Castle, they were met by a formal escort. Horns sounded softly. The guards straightened.
A soldier led them through the expansive corridors until they reached the main hall, its doors grand and open, sunlight streaming through painted windows that bathed the room in hues of gold and crimson.
A herald stepped forward and announced in a loud, clear voice, "Presenting Lord Shi Gan and Lord Shi Song of the Shi Clan, sons of the Governor of Jiaozhi, Shi Xie!"
All conversation ceased. Every head turned.
Shi Gan and Shi Song entered, flanked by a modest but dignified entourage of their own trusted retainers and military officers. They stepped forward with practiced grace, stopping at the prescribed distance, and bowed deeply, cupping their hands in front of them.
"Lord Lie Fan," Shi Gan spoke, his voice deep and respectful, "we come bearing both respect and submission. We offer our allegiance to your rule, for we have seen the signs and recognize the virtue in your rule."
Shi Song continued, "The domain under your rule has prospered. Heaven has blessed you with another son, more heir for your legacy. We have no doubts remaining. The Shi Clan wishes to join your banner, to serve in peace and in war, in loyalty and in duty. To prove our allegiance, I will stay here in Xiapi as a captive."
There was a long moment of silence.
Then Lie Fan rose from his seat.
His expression was unreadable at first, as he descended the dais and approached the two brothers. The tension in the hall grew thick, but not from hostility. From gravity.
When he reached them, he extended both hands, placing one on each of their shoulders.
"I accept the loyalty of the Shi Clan," he said, his voice steady and strong. "Not as a conqueror to the conquered, but as brother to brother. Let the past be buried. Let the future rise from this day forward. Shi Song, you will not be a captive but an honored guest under my rule, so your father would not be worried about your well being here in Xiapi."
Shi Gan and Shi Song bowed again, deeper this time, feeling appreciative and grateful to Lie Fan for the words he have just said.
Around the hall, there were nods of approval. Jia Xu's eyes twinkled with satisfaction. Guan Yu gave a quiet, respectful nod. Zhuge Liang's lips curved into a subtle smile.
A servant brought forward a scroll, Lie Fan's formal decree, bearing the seal of his rule. It detailed the new status of the Shi Clan, retaining their lands as Lie Fan's vassal, with governance rights preserved under his authority.
With that, the atmosphere softened. Conversation resumed in more casual tones, and wine was brought forward in honor of both the new pacts and the newborn child.
Yet even in celebration, the minds of these men were ever watchful, always strategizing. Later, in a quieter chamber adjoining the main hall, Lie Fan sat with his advisors once more, joined now by Shi Gan and Shi Song, who were still absorbing the surreal transition of their political identities.
